It is finished. Whew.

Okay, so one day I am over at [livejournal.com profile] seperis's site and I'm all trying to make her QaF WIP "How It's Gonna Be" update by staring at it and I realize that she has written just a ton of Smallville stories and I like Smallville okay and I was bored, so I read one. And then I read another. This then became a habit...habit, addiction, it is all semantics really. A few days later I realize that the combination of both "Shattered" airing and Jenn's stories have sucked me into yet another fandom. Cool.

So here is my first Smallvile vid - and I have to say that if it were not for my betas [livejournal.com profile] sockkpuppett and [livejournal.com profile] renenet, this vid would not even be finished or make sense or well - without ya'll, I am nothing.

I haven't watched SV since the beginning of S2 (well, maybe a stray episode here and there) so I'm not familiar with a lot of those clips and I'm going to go have to track down the context but that didn't diminish my love for this vid.

It's amazing and powerful and wonderful. I'm going to and watch it again.

I highly recommend the season 3 eps "Shattered" and "Asylum" which were pretty much the basis and inspiration for this vid. I'm apparently a sucker for Lex Torture.

I don't even watch Smallville...I'll admit it. I've tried, and although I adore Lex more than is healthy, and Tom Welling is quite gorgeous, I can't seem to get into it, almost despite myself.

I really want to say something brilliant as feedback for this because this is brilliant. I can't speak for the plot, of course, because all I know of the show is Clark is superman and Clark and Lex's loveissopure. *g* But the *images*...gah, the movement and the use of color and motion and repetition is incredible. It plays up and enhances the comic-book feel of the show. I adore the imagery...in particular the nightmarishness of the ending with the shots of Lex strapped down clipped with the shots of him waving the gun, attacking on the island, and the dreamy feeling of the beginning, with the clouds.

And of course, The Pretty. The incredible Pretty.

You just made me want to give Smallville another chance - now I'm going to have to go find out how to download episodes. See what you've done? *g*

That was really awesome.

So, how'd you do that? In particular, how'd you do the fast cutting between scenes with no apparent cross fades (though maybe there were short ones that I couldn't see?) and yet it looks like it just flows together perfectly?

Re:

Okay - the long and the tech of it: luck. Seriously.

At 2:52 I wanted to signify that this is the start of Lex losing his memories. I started with a quick cut between him on the table prior to shock treatment and an earlier scene of Clark saving him from the an assassin. The shock treatment scenes all glow in the original source and I wanted the flashes of memories to match that - but then to glow more or to move in an unreal way - to signify that this is a memory, this is in Lex's head and then I upped the levels and/or added an echo effect on the memory clips and faded them out to white to signify that this is being lost, unhinged or perverted. It was important to me to establish right off that it wasn't just what Clark could do for Lex that he was losing - that he was losing Clark. I decided to try to use really quick cuts of Clark's face - at 2:57 I actually take a smile of Clark with a daytime setting and I put in 2 frames Clark, one frame Lex on the table, 3 frames Clark, 3 frames Lex on table, and then 6 frames of Clark and then I turn up the levels for another 7 frames and then fade to a white matte over the next 7 frames - I then faded the white matte into Lex struggling as they place the mouthguard over the next 4 frames. I wanted these shots to establish losing and then then next few quick clips are all about 4 frames long and are shots of Clarks face used previously in the vid with about 3-4 frames of Lex underneath all of them. It took some trial and error to get it right and it is still sort of jarring, but I kinda like that part of it - for this. The goal in this part was to jar. I pull out of the quick cuts with a smiling Clark and applied and echo to that effect.

I think I love best of all the way that you used the title phrase... the repetition in the song, and how you used it to show all the ways in which Clark and Lex *define* each other by their very existence; that was... inspired. I loved it.

Thanks for sharing.

This. is. awesome.

Frankly, I haven't been watching Smallville since S1, but I've kept up to date roughly on what was happening though my friends page.

I LOVE what you've done with movement. I LOVE the various ways you've transitioned, on the beat and against the beat and blends and blends on top of blends and more that I can't even describe. I love your use of face shots, it's some of the best I've seen anywhere because of how you timed the small movements of the eyes or the mouth or matched camera movement to the song and wow.

Love how the red get's more saturated at the end of the blood-rain sequence. Blood on his hands with hitting/meeting Clark? (BEAUTILFUL timing there). Loved how you implied Clark flying off the bridge with the cloud sequence. (the second flash = them hitting the water?) And then the LuuuurveAtFirstSight shot (lovelovelove how the breathing is matched up), followed by the horrified look of Daddy Dearest? LOVE.

And the crow shot with the stilled movement in supersaturated colors? BRILL. It brings me to mind of Van Gogh (y'know, hack off thy nose/ear if it offends thee?). (and of course the symbolism of blackbirds...somuchlove)

Love the dark to bright transition at 00:40, gorgeous timing there. with Clark disappearing and Lionel appearing and ::WIBBLE::. The relief of Clark's face at "slide"! And then Lex's show of trust! And the mini!Clark smiling and touching mini!Lex, and then Lionel at "sucks and..." ::brain derails right there...

and then LEX! staring at Clark's family! ::hugs him:: marvelous how you had a shot of him framed by Clark's family in the foreground cutting to a shot of him alone, so effective, and then pulls to Clark and him alone and then them walking off together...love. it. especially with how you cut it to the heavy drum beats and with how Lex smiles at the end...::buries face in hands and merbles::

And the brightness of Lex fading to the sun to the meteor crashing...Lex crashing? and ooooooooooo, loved your use of items and Lex's discovering...(the movements at "I'm unclean" is SO PERFECT) and the way Clark's smile falls apart and connecting Lionel with "seems to lose" (and then Lex closing his mouth at "power of speech" and LEX losing his voice! asljhd1fg!) and then Lex's hands sliding away down Clarks face at "you're slipping" ::cries::

(I think that's one of the most memorable bits of your vid next to the car crash and the memory-wipe sequence...)

The hug! the flowers! Lex's face at "at all" and then the way you built that climax with the car crash...omgaskjhfd!

and the marvelously timed hit where Clark dove to cover Lex, and the whole sequence of Clark saving Lex over and over again...

and of course then we get to the memory-wipe. and. God. That is the most marvelously done bit of work that I think I've ever seen, and it's not like you stuck with a formula, which made it stronger. Like it seems like every bit of it was unique, from how it was specifically set to beat (syncopated or not, on the beat or through the beat) and the varying scenes of Clark and how marvelously you've cut and blended and rendered this who entire sequence is shatteringly shockingly amazing, especially with how the images, for all their diversity, STILL managed to maintain the thread of feeling and still managed to be consistent and consistently amazing (and I really love how the 'shooting at Clark' bit was fuzzy like a lost rememberance, and how you've layered the "Lex hitting" bits).

And the ending sequence!!!! ::cries:: Without Clark we'd get Lex utterly desolately alone and blood from the sky...

And then Clark looking resigned almost and then Lex...smiling...::utterly in love::

I'm guessing at the themes because I haven't personally seen the episodes, but...Are you doing the argument that Clark could save Lex? Because what with Lionel disapproving and trying to Lex's affections and the memorywipe and without Clark...the 'future' will come to pass?

asjkdasjdfjlk. so. dead. so. in. lovewiththismygodmygod.

my only quibble with the entire vid is that the timing feels slightly off at the "bullet catch" shot, after Clark crashes into the car...but that's *it*. marvelous timing all throughout making it so incredibly effective and paired with gut-punchng images and effects and the whole thing is just stunningly enthrallingly shockingly gorgeous.

Thank you. Thank you for sharing this, for making vids, and for being so creative and talented. ::GLOMP::

I don't watch Smallville, but it's clear that you're stretching your vidding style even more in this vid. I never know exactly what I'll get from your vids, but I know it'll always be worth experiencing.

The colors and movement and juxtaposition of imagery in this one make for very interesting ride. I would imagine it's got that much more impact for fans of the show, but even without the backstory, it's a pretty show for the rest of us. :)

I literally can't tell you how impressed I am by this; I don't have the requisite visual arts language to describe it. All attempts would end up being things like "OH my god and with the tick-tock sequence? And the flashes of Clark's face? And the bleaching into and out of? And the way you used the clips from Hourglass? IT WAS SO GOOD" screamed repeatedly with much flailing. Your talents are so extreme as to be damned near scary, darlin'. And can I just say? Damn. I DO watch Smallville and that was just about better than anything they've had to say on there. I think you managed to wrap up the whole Lex/Clark - Hero/Villain - Secret/Truth mytharc in, what five minutes or less. That is a god-damn skill all right.

I loved everything about this: Lionel jumping in at all the right times to set a pulse for Lex's emotional life, (steeped in lies, loneliness, and distrust) the way you made the colors fade in and out to match the song and the emotions, and especially the use of the lyrics "tick-tock" with the corresponding footage. That was really the moment I was holding my breath in wonder.

Welcome to the fandom! Pull up a chair and stay forever. ((leaves offerings at your shrine))

Christ, that hurt.

I literally got so edgy when you got to the electroshock sequence, and were cutting back and forth between that and the memories-- it was just so, so, I *didn't want to watch it*. I wanted to shut the vid down and just not watch it ever because, DAMN, that just HURTS. It was like all the pain of "Asylum" and all the pain of those previous episodes crammed into this *moment*-- the music and the images just melded *perfectly*. I wasn't thinking "oh, nice lyric/image match" or "nice technical accomplishment there," as I usually do when watching vids-- I was thinking "OW, OW, OH HELL NO, OW."
