NEW Vid!!! Smallville

It is finished. Whew.
Okay, so one day I am over at
seperis's site and I'm all trying to make her QaF WIP "How It's Gonna Be" update by staring at it and I realize that she has written just a ton of Smallville stories and I like Smallville okay and I was bored, so I read one. And then I read another. This then became a habit...habit, addiction, it is all semantics really. A few days later I realize that the combination of both "Shattered" airing and Jenn's stories have sucked me into yet another fandom. Cool.
So here is my first Smallvile vid - and I have to say that if it were not for my betas
sockkpuppett and
renenet, this vid would not even be finished or make sense or well - without ya'll, I am nothing.

review (part 1 of 2)
Date: 2004-01-30 11:02 pm (UTC)Frankly, I haven't been watching Smallville since S1, but I've kept up to date roughly on what was happening though my friends page.
I LOVE what you've done with movement. I LOVE the various ways you've transitioned, on the beat and against the beat and blends and blends on top of blends and more that I can't even describe. I love your use of face shots, it's some of the best I've seen anywhere because of how you timed the small movements of the eyes or the mouth or matched camera movement to the song and wow.
Love how the red get's more saturated at the end of the blood-rain sequence. Blood on his hands with hitting/meeting Clark? (BEAUTILFUL timing there). Loved how you implied Clark flying off the bridge with the cloud sequence. (the second flash = them hitting the water?) And then the LuuuurveAtFirstSight shot (lovelovelove how the breathing is matched up), followed by the horrified look of Daddy Dearest? LOVE.
And the crow shot with the stilled movement in supersaturated colors? BRILL. It brings me to mind of Van Gogh (y'know, hack off thy nose/ear if it offends thee?). (and of course the symbolism of blackbirds...somuchlove)
Love the dark to bright transition at 00:40, gorgeous timing there. with Clark disappearing and Lionel appearing and ::WIBBLE::. The relief of Clark's face at "slide"! And then Lex's show of trust! And the mini!Clark smiling and touching mini!Lex, and then Lionel at "sucks and..." ::brain derails right there...
and then LEX! staring at Clark's family! ::hugs him:: marvelous how you had a shot of him framed by Clark's family in the foreground cutting to a shot of him alone, so effective, and then pulls to Clark and him alone and then them walking off together...love. it. especially with how you cut it to the heavy drum beats and with how Lex smiles at the end...::buries face in hands and merbles::
And the brightness of Lex fading to the sun to the meteor crashing...Lex crashing? and ooooooooooo, loved your use of items and Lex's discovering...(the movements at "I'm unclean" is SO PERFECT) and the way Clark's smile falls apart and connecting Lionel with "seems to lose" (and then Lex closing his mouth at "power of speech" and LEX losing his voice! asljhd1fg!) and then Lex's hands sliding away down Clarks face at "you're slipping" ::cries::
(I think that's one of the most memorable bits of your vid next to the car crash and the memory-wipe sequence...)
The hug! the flowers! Lex's face at "at all" and then the way you built that climax with the car crash...omgaskjhfd!
and the marvelously timed hit where Clark dove to cover Lex, and the whole sequence of Clark saving Lex over and over again...
and of course then we get to the memory-wipe. and. God. That is the most marvelously done bit of work that I think I've ever seen, and it's not like you stuck with a formula, which made it stronger. Like it seems like every bit of it was unique, from how it was specifically set to beat (syncopated or not, on the beat or through the beat) and the varying scenes of Clark and how marvelously you've cut and blended and rendered this who entire sequence is shatteringly shockingly amazing, especially with how the images, for all their diversity, STILL managed to maintain the thread of feeling and still managed to be consistent and consistently amazing (and I really love how the 'shooting at Clark' bit was fuzzy like a lost rememberance, and how you've layered the "Lex hitting" bits).
And the ending sequence!!!! ::cries:: Without Clark we'd get Lex utterly desolately alone and blood from the sky...
And then Clark looking resigned almost and then Lex...smiling...::utterly in love::
I'm guessing at the themes because I haven't personally seen the episodes, but...Are you doing the argument that Clark could save Lex? Because what with Lionel disapproving and trying to Lex's affections and the memorywipe and without Clark...the 'future' will come to pass?

review (part 3 of 2, because I'm a dumbass and suddenly realized...)
Date: 2004-01-30 11:14 pm (UTC)And oh! that little movement of Lionel's rubbing Lex's head at "spin it sideways?" perfect
erm.
merp. sorry. I kinda spazzed into a puddle of squee all over the place. I hope you can make sense of my rambling, but I'll clarify any comment if you want...::sinks into floor and peers at you from the carpet threads::

Re: review (part 1 of 2)
Date: 2004-01-31 08:22 pm (UTC)Oh thank you, thank you, thank you. I am a happy woman.
and of course then we get to the memory-wipe. and.
Aw gee - thank you so much. Actually, the entire mind wipe was extememly formulaic - to me. I was following a very specific path of how the memories would be lost and how it is affecting the inner Lex at each part. But this was really just me - a way to keep myself on track and to make certain the brain wipe made visual sense on any level. I did try to keep a lot of the timing inconsistant - but that was just a happy accident - when I was going back and retiming clips in then vid, I liked how differing where the cuts come and if the clip will cut on the beat or if the internal motion will hit on that beat kinda keep you off-guard. I wanted this sequence to be very jarring.
I'm guessing at the themes because I haven't personally seen the episodes, but...Are you doing the argument that Clark could save Lex? Because what with Lionel disapproving and trying to Lex's affections and the memorywipe and without Clark...the 'future' will come to pass?
I think the future is inevitable with these guys - in many ways they live in a state of pre-determined destiny and I think the show is strongest when it plays up that theme. Even so, I think Lex believes that Clark *could* save him, redeem him and possibly enable Lex to resist the corruption of his father. I think if Lex had been allowed to keep the knowledge he gained in "Shattered" then the future would have been changed - he *worshipped* Clark once he learned the truth. Of course, he wasn't allowed that and I think that this was the first serious, significant step the show has taken toward moving the boys toward the inevitable rift. It is coming. There is now escaping it.
Re: review (part 1 of 2)
Date: 2004-01-31 09:01 pm (UTC)ah, but see that's formulatic in the theme and the storyline not in the presentation and in the storytelling, which is marvelous.
how it is affecting the inner Lex at each part
ooooooh! ::rewatch:: beginning with Clark saving him (don't it always? ::smirk::), to Clark watching him (am assuming Lex's POV), to Clark leaving him, to Lex trying to touch him, to Clark getting hurt by Kryptonite, to Lex staring at his hands? ("blood on my hands" metaphor? I don't know the context of that scene), and of course Lex shooting at Clark and Clark falling...
I did try to keep a lot of the timing inconsistant - but that was just a happy accident
oh hush. Quite a lot of genious comes from happy accidents, and it says a lot of your abilities that you've recognized it for what it is instead of going back and trying to 'fix' it.
btw. rewatching it for the nth time, you did the Lex!face fading to the sun...::boggles:: and what with Clark getting his powers from the sun, and what with Clark discovering his powers because of Lex and forced to use them because of Lex and. dude, that's neat, especially with the "sun falling to earth" and then switching to Clark being taking away from him...to the superman symbol to Lex holding krypotonite, to Lex with the Clark=superboy proof, to comparing Lex with Lionel to the "I'm unclean line"...
oooo.
neat
I think the future is inevitable with these guys - in many ways they live in a state of pre-determined destiny and I think the show is strongest when it plays up that theme.
heh, that's actually why I went cold turkey on the show/fandom for awhile. Couldn't have the show without the fandom and the fandom is so on angst. Not that I don't love a good angstfest, but I didn't need to be jerked into a pit of gaping depression by every. single. fic. (do that quite well enough on my own, thank y'kindly)
nevertheless, I'm a sucker for great vids, and a sucker for great music, and.
yeah.
thank god I checked this out...
