Okay - the long and the tech of it: luck. Seriously.
At 2:52 I wanted to signify that this is the start of Lex losing his memories. I started with a quick cut between him on the table prior to shock treatment and an earlier scene of Clark saving him from the an assassin. The shock treatment scenes all glow in the original source and I wanted the flashes of memories to match that - but then to glow more or to move in an unreal way - to signify that this is a memory, this is in Lex's head and then I upped the levels and/or added an echo effect on the memory clips and faded them out to white to signify that this is being lost, unhinged or perverted. It was important to me to establish right off that it wasn't just what Clark could do for Lex that he was losing - that he was losing Clark. I decided to try to use really quick cuts of Clark's face - at 2:57 I actually take a smile of Clark with a daytime setting and I put in 2 frames Clark, one frame Lex on the table, 3 frames Clark, 3 frames Lex on table, and then 6 frames of Clark and then I turn up the levels for another 7 frames and then fade to a white matte over the next 7 frames - I then faded the white matte into Lex struggling as they place the mouthguard over the next 4 frames. I wanted these shots to establish losing and then then next few quick clips are all about 4 frames long and are shots of Clarks face used previously in the vid with about 3-4 frames of Lex underneath all of them. It took some trial and error to get it right and it is still sort of jarring, but I kinda like that part of it - for this. The goal in this part was to jar. I pull out of the quick cuts with a smiling Clark and applied and echo to that effect.
