I bought the American Music Issue of Vanity Fair yesterday.
I had to. I had no choice.
Willie Nelson and Dr Dre are on the cover. Together. Let me repeat, Willie Nelson and Dr Dre are on the cover. So is Queen Latifah and Norah Jones, but whatever - Willie Nelson and Dr Dre!!! And when you open it up (it is one of those 3 page covers) there is Lucinda Williams on the next page. Along with some other people but I could care less because at that point I was pretty much spasming in front of the checkout.
D'ya think Dre and Willie would collaborate on something? I mean - they are sitting fairly close together and potentially the shoot took awhile. Maybe an idea took root? If it happened they could just call it "Sisabet's Favorite Song" and be done with it. It's not as if Willie would be adverse to it - man will pretty much do anything for money (witness duets with Toby Keith *shudders*) and a collaboration with Dre would have to be better than the aforementioned TK crapfest or even his over-indulgent treacle with Babyface. That was disappointing. But Dre and Willie - man. That would be awesome. I won't even consider adding Lucinda to the mix cause I just don't wanna break my own heart.
Musically this weekend I moved in reverse - making the natural progression from The Boo Radleys to The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. It should have been the other way around: I start with The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, move to The Boo Radleys and then transition seamlessly into The Chemical Brothers. That would make sense and flow much better. Of course, right now I can easily make it flow into The Meters and then P-Funk and that could be interesting since I haven't listened to George Clinton in a good long while.
Of course, from funk I could easily move straight into hip hop, but that is kind of where I started from and it is too soon to go back cause the last time I was there I descended into crazy-Nelly-listening and planning a vid to "Hot In Here" so - just. No. I can't be trusted to go back just yet. See why it is important for me to have a plan? Bad things happen when I don't have a plan. Bad vids happen. You don't even want to know about the Lindsey/Angel thing to "Ride With Me." I'm weak around the Nelly. So I'm thinking about moving from Clinton into Placebo, but I was just listening to Placebo and if I listen anymore an S/A vid might just happen and S/A vids should never just happen. They are special and must be nurtured and coaxed.
Who should I be listening to that I'm not? I know that there is this music out there that I am *not* listening to and if you people on my FList are holding out on me, then you are directly responsible for my current deprivation.
ETA: Oh, I'd kinda like to listen to Laura Love - so I also need a plan to get me from P-Funk to Laura Love - preferably in 3 CDs or less. Now - Go!

Y'know, not to knock Nelly - he has value as an artist, but sometimes I do yearn for something a bit more meaningful than going to da club.
Oh - "Shum Ticky" - could I move directly from P-Funk into that or should I listen to something else in the transition?
*is excited*

I adore Willie. Now that Johnny is gone, all my focus is on him. What album is this cover on? I haven't heard it yet.

Date: 2003-10-20 01:40 pm (UTC)One should not throw a buncha glowery clips at Premiere and hope they stick. That would be disrespectful to the pairing.
It is wrong to trivialize the hotness and to use it incorrectly. It's like going over to the Dark Side of the Force - it seems like a good idea at the time, but then you are all stuck in a very hot, black plastic costume with a faceplate and ventilator.

Date: 2003-10-20 09:18 am (UTC)Ahahhaaa. *g* I'm glad I'm not the only one who has to slap back a hip hop fascination. I, too, had a "Hot In Here" moment of vid planning. I talked myself out of a Highlander vid to 50 cent's P.I.M.P the other day (for which I blame you!) hee.

Date: 2003-10-20 01:44 pm (UTC)That sooo needs to be a vid! Yes. About Duncan. If you vid it, I'll do Angel to "Patiently Waiting" - it'll be brilliant.

It is a great song - with that baseline. And a little bit of Huh, uh and a little bit of uh, huh. Yeah. It would be fun to work with.
*backs away from the Nelly slowly*

You should watch your mouth

And he doesn't even try to rhyme "face" - it's like he has given up and man - I think it is so season 5 Angel. Angel used to be a pimp, but now he is a thug. Straight cold-killer thug. And the record company could be Wolfram & Hart.
See - 50cent - you know you wanna vid 50.

Date: 2003-10-20 01:51 pm (UTC)I have no idea. Hell, everyone but Lum told me "Cowboy" was a bad idea.
As far as "Hot In Here" - I actually think it could make an incredible vid - *but* it was overplayed last summer and people are sick of it and the thing that is needed to overcompensate for that (a hook - a clear and good idea) is missing with me. I just want to make pretty man dance to the fun song - but that is not enough for a vid to overcome it's roots so to speak, if its roots are a dubious song choice.
Generally, if you are inspired enough - you have to go with it and just trust that while people won't get the song choice when you tell them - they will when they *see* the vid. It's still better to fail miserably than to have an okay vid to a ho-hum song that really doesn't do anything for anyone, IMO. Mediocrity is the enemy here. I could easily make a mediocre vid to "Hot In Here" right now. I resist the temptation.

Date: 2003-10-20 02:27 pm (UTC)music? I wanna talk about ME!
Date: 2003-10-20 03:51 pm (UTC)Undercover Brother here, approaching stalker status. Interesting that you mention TK, as a tidbit about him hit my radar yesterday.
Some old friends came to visit last weekend. One, from Nashville, has an internal source (from TK's management) that reports TK requires a hooker for every stop on his concert tour.
In a way this makes him a lot more interesting than the artists who just want a bowl of green M&M's. I wonder if the Smoking Gun knows about this...
