I am having difficulty installing the patch (thanks to Elke and Lum I was able to do the registry thing and removed the thingy-doey) - but I don't think this has anything to do with the worm - anyone ever heard of this?

KB823980 Setup Error: Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer.

So I found out what the Cryptographic Service is -- but no idea how to fix this.

Go to Cryptographic Services via Control Panel/Admin tools/Services

Find it in the list and make sure it is started. Right Click and select Start.

Did and Done (and thank you) and I still get this error message. I might contact Microsoft - since it is a security patch the tech help is free, right?

You're welcome to try, but I'm betting their tech support area is so swamped right now that they won't be up for air for weeks...

You might try asking versaphile, who is the most computer-knowledgeable fan I know.

destina mentioned that she can't use LiveUpdate in conjunction with some of her vidding software. Perhaps the cryptographic service is tied in with that incompatibility that she was mentioning?

In any case, she installs the critical patches manually... so she might have some helpful tips for you, if the comment above didn't already solve your problem.

I've been able to install updates before today. And this is when I click on install on the patch I downloaded. Maybe I disabled something this morning...

That's too bad. I hope you won't have to re-build your system. My husband is a systems administrator, and now he's telling me more than I will ever be able to understand about worms. If you'd like I can put him on and he can tell you what he thinks about it.
