This was my response. I am posting it here because I don't trust that it will not be deleted. I don't like this at all. I never wanted to name someone publically - this is the first time I have done so, despite numerous instances of clip theft. But I said that I would, if the person did not take down stolen vids when asked and last night proved that I have to stand by my statements as well. So I named names. And I will do it again.

Grey Day did not originate with you. No - but inconsiderate fans like you are the driving force. All of the videos at Headtilt.com , however are down because of you. Some are most likely down permanently, as I am so tired of seeing them plundered. Dude - you stole from "Closer" - how could you do that? Do you realize how much work went into that vid? You profess to be a vidder - if you really are then you know that took months of work. As did all of the vids you stole from. I have to hand it to you - you do have taste. Ripping off me and Lum and Jainie - was it cause our source was so pretty? Was it because we have tightly edited scenes and rarely waste time on static shots, instead focusing on movement? Was it because we use scenes you don't always see in a hundred other videos so it looked fresh? Do you realize how much time and effort was invested in each of those vids to create something unique - and you come along, treat it as free and easy downloadable source and chop it up for "your masterpiece" - you treat me, my vids and my site (whose bandwidth is paid for by me and my sister dr dawn) like shit. Like a whore.

Please don't give me that you did not know it was wrong - it would not have been hard to join the BtVS vidding community (you know the list owner) and have quickly become informed about the accepted forms of behavior. I see that on Twop where you were informed that it is frowned upon - you stated you would have "curb the habit" - do you know how infuriating that statement is to me? Last night you responded to my sister's private emailed request by taking down only one version of the vid - when you know full well that the majority of your vids are comprised of stolen clips. It is not my job to catch you stealing. If you were truly contrite and truly wanted to be a member of this community - you would have taken down all stolen vids without our "reminders." I am furious. I am also very depressed over this whole damn deal. I am so sick and tired of being ripped off - and I have only been vidding for a year. I would hate to leave online vidding. I love it. It is tremendously rewarding and it is the way the vidding community was introduced to me. I would like to do that for some other vidders as well, eventually (as Lum did for me) - but I don't know how much more of the inconsideration I can really take. I mean - I am paying for a site so that people can rip me off - it does not make sense...

BTW - it isn't as if you downloaded the vids in a vacuumm - my LJ is linked to my site - I rant about this constantly. You never looked? You never saw the notices on other vid sites not to steal? Did you think it was just a suggestion? Did you bother reading any of the info on these sites? My mind is just truly boggled right now.

You've managed to completely miss the point. And when you've written a story, composed a song, drawn a picture, made a sculpture, created a songvid, created something that you really cared about, whether it was completely original or a derivative fan-work... and then had someone rip it off without your permission and without giving you credit for your creativity and hard work, well, then people might be more inclined to listen when you say something so purely idiotic and hurtful as "chill out."

Until then? Learn something before you open your mouth and stick your foot in it. There are plenty of people here who know what they're talking about who would be willing to calmly and rationally explain things to you. I'm one of them, when I'm not getting offended at random anonymous comments designed just to be hurtful.

You talk about how much YOU spent on vidding, well how much did Fox spend on filming? All of your complaining basically amounts to whining about what is obviously a college student who is trying out a hobby. And your taking the vids down doesn't do anything about copies that might be out in circulation, and only "deprives" new viewers who haven't already seen it. You essentially have no credibility on the issue, since all of your source is in fact stolen, despite whatever disclaimer you put on your website. Chew on that for a while.

you're a very vengeful person. most of what you write is amusing, but your interpersonal skills suggest that you have few long-lasting relationships. noone has written anything personal about you in this thread (until now), yet you have lashed out at several people over this incident. i simply pointed out that your own work has some similarities with the qualities you have accused alliterator of having (ie, stealing source). you have neither affirmed nor denied this claim. people can form their own opinion on this matter.

I don't feel that I need to justify myself to you. I don't feel I have lashed out to anyone, I have expressed how I feel about a situation and that is all. I don't have to post a reference list or resume to satisfy you or anyone. Absolutely, people will form their own opinion. Fine by me. My opinion is that you are sadly misguided and afraid to sign your posts. Good for you.

Fanmade vidding has been around much longer than I have and will be around with or without the internet. I plan on being a part of that community, and there are standards of practices and of respect that have to be observed. If I am uncomfortable with sharing my vids online, I will take them down. I have taken them down for now because of that. I will still vid, I just won't share them outside of the vidder community. The point of fan-vidding is we all start from the same place (the original episode) and where we go from there is only reigned in by our creativity, technical know-how, and vision. It is artistic expression. The vid that appears is quite different from anything aired on the original show. For one vidder to take another vidder's creation and chop it up is akin to slapping that person in the face.

If you don't like fanvids - you don't have to watch them. You also don't have to agree with me. But as far as someone wanting to gain entrance into the vidding community - you have to respect others. That is basic in any society.

First of all, fannish vidding has been around since the first Star Trek original series slideshow was set to music at a convention back in the 1960s. The issues discussed here in sisabet's LJ and in others today are not new.

No one is ignoring copyright or trademark, nor are we saying that intellectual property should be ignored.

OK, Mr. Anonymous, let's clear some stuff up right now. Vidding is using a show's material. Yes, no one has debated that. We all know it. No one's shocked. No one's yelling, "WAIT! WTF? You mean I'm using clips of a copyrighted show? Holy fucking shit!!!"

You know what? We get that. But, we are taking clips from a show. Not clips from a video that they did. This is a ridiculous and lame attempt at diverting the issue here. These are tributes to the show we love to watch. It inspires us.
