I just want to say that [livejournal.com profile] elke_tanzer and [livejournal.com profile] tzikeh rock. This is not new information, but I think perhaps a day dedicated to them would be nice. A Vid Activist Appreciation Day.

Wow, that girl is just the Energizer Bunny of Crazy Vid Plagiarists.

Sis...this may be something already addressed...

I don't really follow the vidding community but when I thought about vidding something myself...I joined a file sharing group. It was hard to find...kind of like a Masonic Temple and I was the friend of a friend and knocked three times and so on. Maybe you already do something like I am about to suggest or offer an open invite to others to join the vidding club. But well...raw data is hard to come by for some. If the only recourse open to these hacks is hacking up someone else's work, and they are committed to vidding...well...maybe they can be headed off at the original urge.

When you do a new vid...don't you create or download raw clips? Couldn't the Vidder Activists set up a yahoo account or something with temporary access to the raw data?

I could see the file space would be huge to store them forever...but if plagerism is such a problem...and the problem is REALLY the work the vidder does to prep the clip...then why not offer the original raw clips for a short time after you produce a new vid? This btw would also be a good way to CATCH the plagarists...because they would be unable to produce raw data clips if asked.

Um - I'm not posting clips that I used in my vids to head off plagiarists. It takes time, effort and talent to clip for each vid - this is work, hard work. Capturing or clipping from the original source is part of the game, and I am not willing to let my work be cheapened because someone else is to lazy to actually go to the episode of Angel where he dusts 2 vamps at once and find that clip. Just no. I'm sorry but I have had it up to here with these thieves excuses. It just doesn't wash.

Bandwidth is very expensive - and I do belong to a file sharing group - however due to system problems I can't really stay on it for any length of time. If a friend needs a file - hell yeah - I'll transfer over AIM and all is hunky dory. But I have been hit up to often in the past for clips by very demanding strangers - the store is closed. One girl asked for me to transfer a copy of "School Hard" (I had never spoken to her before). After I uploaded the file to my hard drive and transferred it to her (which does compromise what else I can do and slows down all other downloads) and then the little shit had the audacity to complain to me that she didn't like the encode - she doesn't use AVI files and could I re-encode it? WTF? I'm tired of it.

There is no excuse for plagiarism. If you want to vid then figure it out. There are plenty of people around to help you figure out how to obtain the source on your own. I have shared info on Newsgroups and file-sharing groups with tons of people.

Also - the size of these clips sometimes reaches a couple of gigs. The clip file for "Battleflag" an unfinished project, is now at 14 gigs. It is just not feasable - also the idea makes my skin itch.

If you don't have the ability to vid originally, from the foundation up, then don't vid. I know that I wanted to vid for four years before I was actually able to do it. There wasn't a lot of--if any--footage for my fandom available for download. I had to obtain my own source any way that I could. Now? All you have to do in Buffy fandom, with its ubiquitous vidders, is ASK. They'd be more than happy to point you to a way to get source, including some P2P groups. There's Kazaa, the newsgroups, etc. All it takes is a little effort.
From: [identity profile] sisabet.livejournal.com
Finding source for Buffy is extremely easy, and getting easier by the day - and there are tons of resources and groups and people excited about the process willing to help. Really - the old "I can't get the source, whine, whine whine" excuse holds no water.

Ah...so it isn't just the actual changes...

...it is also the effort it took to find and cut the clips and the instinct of the vidder to pick the correct clip out of the entire show? Well, that does make a bit more sense. And yes, I can see how having people ask you for clips constantly would be annoying and time consuming, even if they weren't demanding. Kind of like the random requests to beta that I get.

Thanks for explaining the position.

Sorry if I got a bit heated in my explanation - this is a very sensitive topic for me and I have become more and more frustrated with this as time has gone on...

Yes - finding what works - what is vidable is part of the process. It is a very important part of the process. It is an artform. When that is disrespected by someone who claims to be a vidder I want to tear my hair out.

Actually, it isn't so hard to proove it. Once you see the "Hey, this looks familiar!", you can compare the copy to the original frame by frame. There are very few vidders who have the high end equipment, technical skill, and obsessive perfectionism required to pull off a perfect edit every time. Most vids will have stray frames, rendering glitches and other little tiny defects that you probably won't notice if you are just watching them but that you can find if you go through frame by frame. It's practically impossible for two seperate vidders to exactly duplicate those defects even if they are editing the same two clips on the same software.

Better than fingerprints.

Proving Clip Theft

Oh yeah - proving that it has happened has never been an issue. By and large, the theft occurs from someone using a simple video editor and proving the theft isn't even a matter of searching frame by frame as just pausing the vid.

::sigh::

Unless it is this Desiree person and she just sets down great big chunks of vids to music. I speak from experience: seeing a couple of your vids spliced up and set to another song is just a surreal experience.

Then, of course, there are the true idiots who go on and on about how they made their vids (the ones with all of the complicated overlays) on Windows Movie Maker.
