See, here's the amazing thing about Randy Harrison. Obviously, this piece of film was cut from S1 or S2, and the expression is not in character for either of those seasons, so the cutting makes sense. But over the past 3 years, Randy has aged his character almost entirely through acting: facial expressions, body language, nervous habits, et cetera.

And he's done it so subtly and so consistently, that this face, way back when, seems like the next step, the next year in the character's growth, but now we know that Randy Harrison always had this Justin in there, waiting to be used on the show.

It's freaking amazing, like an x-ray of the acting process. I honestly believe that the reason I like the character of Justin so much is Randy's interpretation of the character. I can even understand why so many QaF US fans, esp. those who watched UK, dropped out the fandom in S2; Justin *was* annoying. But Randy made him annoying because he was scared, lost, out of his depth, drowning, angry, confused, traumatized, in love, self-loathing, depressed, and looking for answers.

And then, he made the "fixing of" seems natural and inevitable. He really is the best actor of the cast, imo, excepting Sharon Gless, although by late S2, a lot of the guest stars were much, much better than the earlier guests, and sometimes (cringes to say) seriously out-did a few of the regular cast, as far as chops go.

Ah, well. That's my rant.

P.S. I suspect this (acting chops) is why we don't see much of Randy on the blooper reels, he's just that damn good. Which kills me, and I have this deep urge to bribe someone on set to, like, blow a raspberry on his tummy to crack him up just so it'll be on the next DVD set. I'm so bad.

Agree whole heartedly- & also with the point that Randy has (perhaps-since I haven't seen UK-qaf & only going by reaction) taken the Justin character to a different place than the British version- due to his acting chops mostly- & due to Randy & Gale's onscreen chemistry, also.

Randy is absolutely the best actor on QaF, I completely agree. He'll say his lines, and I'll think wow, I never would have imagined those words being spoken like that, but it's perfect. He's always new and unexpected. I can't wait to see what he does in season four. Really. I don't think I can wait. *implodes*

Oh, and Peter Paige gets shafted for lines, but I think he's pretty damn good as well.

I totally agree - it is just amazing how he "aged" this character - we are not watching Randy grow-up onscreen at all - we are watching Justin. And it is just incredibly his physical abilty to portray that very thing. It blows me away.

But - I think these pictures are not season one Justin - but I think we will see this in season 4 Justin - or some form of Justin down the line. Eventually. Cause he exists on the Justin Continuum.

But look - that knowing look in his eyes - he didn't have that look season one. He didn't really get that look until season 3. OF COURSE we were fooled!
