So, school started and I got buried in homework and work is work but everything is going really well right now and then suddenly: I was sick. I was so sick I couldn't go to work (I KNOW!) and I am still sick today but I can sit up.  I have homework due tomorrow to work on but I don't wanna? So how's about I start that vidding meme instead?

Also, Imma cheat and do a buncha days today because who knows if I can post tomorrow.
Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup [livejournal.com profile] f1renze!

30 Days of Vidding

Day 1 – How did you first get into vidding, and what was the first fandom you vidded? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?So yeah -- a loooong time ago I discovered slide shows at this X-Files shipper fan site called "The Haven" -- I also discovered fanfic.  The fanfic took like gangbusters but the slide shows made me feel all sorts of uncomfortable and whatnot.

I did find that I loved downloading x-files clips and that my PC had a program that let me arrange those clips in a particular order as a screensaver and I spent hours and hours making my clips align just *right* and when that computer was stolen (late 2001) I was really sad because it had a ton of old family photos I had scanned but not backed up AND my screensaver.  Woe.

Things then started happening.  I started a new job and they sent me to training for two weeks out of state.  During this time my older sister 1. Took care of my dog and 2. Seriously got invested in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  "Fool for Love" had aired --- I was already pretty into the show as was my younger sister, but Dawn was a holdout of sorts.  She had to tape the show for me, since I would not have access to a television with the WB. I came home and she was flipping out  and I was happy to have someone to talk to the show about (besides the girl at work who's husband liked it and sad story: He didn't know about Buffy moving to UPN after S5 and so when the WB started calling the end of S5 the "Network Finale" he thought that was how the show ended. His suffering was immense).

Eventually Dawn remembered I did fannish lurker type things on the computer that was stolen - like read fanfic and watch clips.  Also? Season 6 happened. So I bought another computer.  A low end Dell desktop with a 20 gig hard drive and 250 mbs of ram***.   We started downloading episodes. On Kazaa. Using dial-up.

I still had no idea about vidding - we just wanted our favorite eps on the computer. Dawn was surfing for fanfic of the Spuffy kind a lot (I still maintained a strong dislike for Spike with Buffy but I had always really liked Spike in Season 2). Eventually Dawn found a vid rec'd somewhere --- probably by [livejournal.com profile] boniblithe [livejournal.com profile] boniblithe -- and it was "Rebel Yell" and it, no lie, changed my life. I GOT IT! And, it confirmed everything I knew about Spike and actually made me understand this new, chipped version better.  Finally, validation that Spuffy was a trainwreck!!!

I then did something with the linkage URL and it took us to an index page and there was another vid.  That vid? Was "End  of the World as We Know It"  and it also did something:  It made me decide that obviously this Luminosity and Kamil -- they had to work for the show. No other way around it --- they were professionals.  This did two very important things for me: 1. It showed me what was possible with vidding.  and 2. It showed me that I didn't have to be as GOOD as they were, they obviously had access to, you know, THE SHOW!  I could just play around with clips to music but also build a narrative of some sort, be it a character study or happy-fun-time acopolypse until you got your heart ripped out.

And THAT was when I discovered my computer had Windows Movie Maker already installed and I stayed up until 3am making my first vid with the three downloaded eps I had on the harddrive.  It was a surprise for my sister -- a Spike vid! To, um, Gordon Lightfoot.

Later on, I would meet Luminosity and Kamil online and realize they did not work for the show -- but at the time, I am glad I didn't know this or I would have been too intimidated.  As it was, once I started making vids I was not ashamed to show to other people,  Dawn had to the one to email boni and start her own webpage (Headtilt.com!) and stuff.  I never actually posted or spoke to anyone at all online until Band of Buggered and Nummy Treat because I AM FUCKING SHY! Truefax.
2 – Name the fandoms you've vidded in, and how many vids you've made in that fandom, and if you still vid in it.

Jesus, I have no idea? Someone help me out? Do I count the WMM vids?Buffy: Officially probably just Peacekeeper, right? Unofficially at least a dozen WMM vids. I still have Buffy Ideas.
Angel: 6 I think? Maybe? I've made more than I've posted - poor [livejournal.com profile] f1renze.  I should finish that. Oh and I made that LKBV for Illyria so 8. I don't think I can ever say the door is closed to this fandom in regards to vidding it. It is my FIRST LOVE!
The X-Files: 1 vid, never posted.  My beta thinks my issues with the show impede me actually being able to vid it. My beta is a wise woman.
QaFUS:  maybe 4? Do I count the dangers of overshipping? Then 5? Probably more - I try to pretend they don't exist but I did learn a lot making them. I can safely say I won't vid this fandom again.  Even if I was bought at auction -- this would be the line I would draw.
SV: 5. I think. No, wait - 6! I forgot "Father Figure." Also, you know if I was on a deserted island and could only have one fandom? Yeah. Not finished with Smallville by a long shot.
Farscape: 2 I have posted but at least 3 have been made.  I still love it and still want to talk about it so yeah.  Will Still Vid.
Due South: how many have I posted? Just Icebound Stream, right? So 1.  I've made a few more.  I don't see me being finished with this fandom, as far as vidding it, but I also don't see me posting those vids.  DS is intimidating, y'all.  My vids don't say anything another vid has not said already and better.
Movie vids: 5 I have posted (individually) Kill Bill, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Resident Evil, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I've also vidded Speed/The Lake House and Deathproof (in beta of a sorts) and other stuff I can't remember but have not posted. Once I vid a movie, I am kinda finished with it? Unless it is a series and another angle develops. I wanna vid Jaws.
Invisible Man: Just the one? Really? I feel like I have vidded this more -- I might have. I'll check an old harddive to be certain.  And, yeah - I love this show and I'd love to vid it again. I also would love S2 on DVD. Wait? Is it on DVD yet? Someone would have told me, right?
Stargate Atlantis: Just the 1 and I probably won't vid it again just because the fandom already has some great vids and I am not that great working with the source.
T:SCC: 1 vid and I'd love to vid it again.
Burn Notice: 1 vid and I'd vid it again if someone asked for it at auction or festivids but probably not otherwise.
Merlin: 2. Just 2?  I feel like I've vidded it so much more. Eh, Cappy doesn't live with me anymore but if I like Season 4, I might vid Merlin again.
Community: 3 and hell YES I will continue to vid this.
Lois and Clark:  1 and I feel like I've said my L&C piece, so probably won't vid it again.
Facts of Life: 1 and I have SOOO much more to say about this show, so yeah. Would vid it again, especially if I had a song (hint hint)
Supernatural: 4. Well as long as [livejournal.com profile] sockkpuppett keeps pulling me back in,  I'll keep vidding in this fandom.
Multi: 2 vids?  And yeah - I still have multi ideas. Wait, 3! I did the zombie vid with Lum.
Moonlighting:  1 posted vid and I'd love to make more vids
Arrested Development: 1 and I still have ideas so yes. Will vid again.
Friday Night Lights:  1 vid but sooooo many ideas.
Game of Thrones: 1 vid completed, a thousand in the works but they ALL NEED MORE SOURCE! WHY DID I READ THE BOOKS, WHY???
3 – For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to vid? You are kidding, right?  Let's just go with fandoms overall who are your favorites to vid:

Buffy because she is Buffy.
Angel because of the coat.
John Crichton because he cries so prettily.
Sam Winchester because I want to climb him like a tree.
David Addison because he makes me want to drink Seagrams Golden Wine Coolers.
Cameron because she is a compelling robot.
Lex because he is fucking nuts but makes it work so  well.
Clark because he is Catbaby's mom (no really --- that vid really GETS Clark).
Lois (SV) because she makes me incredibly happy and her character is actually fantastic and goofy and smart.
Tim Riggins because I have eyes.
Tyra Collette because she makes me cry (in the good way)
Troy Barnes because I luff him and want to marry him and have incredibly funny babies that will go to college so they can understand "The Wire"
Alice from Resident Evil was ah-mazing to vid. Likewise, I really enjoyed vidding The Bride from Kill Bill.
Darien Fawkes: He goes evil and it is really easy to nontextually render and I appreciate that.

4 – Do you have a "muse" character or fandom that speaks to you more than others? Who are they, and why did that character/fandom became your muse?
I do not have a muse unless that muse is CATBABY! No seriously -- when I first started vidding? Maybe Angel? But not for years.  I spread my love around.

5 – If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a vid, what did you do about it?

Recently I vidded Friday Night Lights for [livejournal.com profile] f1renze.  Tim Riggins took over the vid.  Before I started that vid? I didn't even *like* him that much. Now that I've finished that vid? I have at least three vid ideas for him.  He's just so pretty. I am only human.

6 –When you vid, do you like vidding a certain kind of male or female archetype? (Credit to Dualbunny for that one!)

I like bruisers! In fact I made an entire vid about that! Well, the bleeders are not bad, too.  Basically, I am all about suffering but not in a torture porn way --- in a It-will-make-you-more-interesting-at-parties kind of way.

That was a joke. Sometimes, I am told, my sense of humor is not obvious.  But I do feel drawn to the characters who go through the most shit. It makes 'em viddable. That and I like the pretty.  I am shallow, you guys, but Lex Luthor was electrocuted at least twice during ten years of Smallville and you know what? That was NOT ENOUGH.

Oh, and I really like very moral characters who are extremely earnest and always strive to do the right thing and then? They fail. I love the repression. The repression is so very sexy to me and when that repression falls apart? I want to be there to pick up the pieces and vid them back together.

7 – Have you ever had a vid (of yours) change your opinion of a character?

Probably. I like Tim Riggins a lot now.

8 – Have you vidded with original source? If so, why did you use original source?

Nope, not creative enough. ETA- I am not creative enough.  Not that original source is anything but.

9 – Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your favorite pairings to vid?

Lol, for each? HA! To the surprise of absolutely noone, my favorite pairings to vid:
Lex and Clark
Spike and Angel.
The End.

I like other pairings just fine, but for ME to vid? That is where it is at!

10 – Pairings – Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone tried to vid a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?

I once tried to make a Teyla/John/Michael vid and couldn't finish it but I blame that on the idea being stupid, rather than the pairing not working for me.

I also didn't really like Tim Riggins or Jason Street when I started vidding FNL but now I LOVE THE PAIRING SO MUCH and I think it is because Tim? Really loves Jason. That is pretty much Tim's mission statement.

ETA: BTW? That low end Dell**? I upgraded the ram to 500 mbs and installed a slave drive and that was my vidding computer until about two years ago. Yeah.

ETA: HOLY FORMATTING ISSUES, BATMAN! Hopefully I fixed it now. Meep.

Aww, that's a very sad story. Did you ever stop to think that maybe LJ is acting out at you because you don't pay it enough attention? You can't just abandon an online journaling service and then expect to take back up where you left off *years* earlier. It had *needs* at a formative age. Needs that you--

Oh, wait, I think I'm confusing this with your day job. I don't know why LJ was being so fucked up on your post. I'm sorry! I'm glad you didn't delete; this was very amusing, and I loved reading it on my lunch break when I otherwise would not have had the opportunity for a dose of [livejournal.com profile] f1renze [livejournal.com profile] sisabet. *hugs*

You are a nice person who is a very good friend and so I have forgiven you for abandoning me and my vids for a silly little con (that I love intensely so yes, thank you so much for that).

LJ apparently has needs. Who knew?
