So, that happened.  Whew. I was there and so were many of you and we had really funtimes and sometimes too much funtimes and we also cried together and raised our glasses together and missed people together and hugged together and generally remembered that we, are in fact, a community.

And community is pretty fuckin' important.

So, I need to be more involved and there was a time when I posted vid meta and vid reviews and talked about vidding, right here! IN THIS JOURNAL, EVEN!! I KNOW, IT SOUNDS CRAZY!  But the thing is I realized this year that if it wasn't for my community and all the fans who were there to help me, prompt me, focus me and just *talk* to me about vidding, I'd still be struggling with figuring out so much. I still struggle, but as anyone who attended my comic book vidding panel can tell you "sisabet knows MS Paint" (that was pretty much the take-away message) so I am doing a-okay.

So yeah. Need to post more. Need to talk about vids more.  Need to grow my hair out a few more inches so the next time I cosplay Robin, I can be Stephanie.

I think we need more Get-Back-To-Basics panels - we've got such a fantastic influx of newer vidders right now and the time has come.  Since I know the best way to get VVC to program a panel is to say "I have this panel idea and am willing to moderate it" this is what I will do (even though I DO NOT USUALLY RUN PANELS IN EVEN YEARS! ) and I encourage EVERYONE to do the same.  Right now I am trying to decide between a very basic "Here Is Your Vid" panel and/or a panel exploring how to use Literalism in vids. I am leaning towards the literalism panel solely because I could open with Keanu Reeves picspam.

I shoulda opened the comics vidding panel with Keanu Picspam. LOST OPPORTUNITIES!


I think that we should all decided that since next year is the 10th Club Vivid, we should make it our Vividcon Prom and if you wanna dress up for "Prom" in whatever way you wanna interpret that word, go for it.  If you wanna cosplay your vid/fav characters and how they might go to Prom, go for it.  Personally, this is mainly why I'd choose Stephanie's Robin over Tim's for Prom. She gets it. Poor Timmy.

Now I want Tim and Kon go to prom fic.

May I Suggest (Up) - absolutedestiny - VVC Premiere
So yeah. We cried. By the time this vid was shown, I had been crying *all day.* Loudly. During vids. You know how when you are trying to just cry silently and do the streaming tears but your throat gets involved and all the emotions start to just spasm right there where you breathe? And suddenly you are "Uh, uh, uh, uh" sobbing? That was me, on Saturday. I might have been incapacitated by this vid, however.

So, why should you watch this? Well for starters it is soooo well done that if you can approach it analytically and actually study AD's technique here, you are bound to learn something new that you can steal co-opt for future vids. His approach to the Big Emotion is rather flawless, is all I'm sayin'.  Also, it is beautiful and lovely and you only have this short amount of time to have an adventure. This vid captures that and also love and and and...

Come Undone (DCU) --ferdalump  - Constructed Reality Vidshow
When I tell you this vid changed my life, I do not think I am exaggerating.  People that know me know I am not a Bale fan. That puts it mildly. Even people that know me very well, possibly don't know my feelings about Lois/Bruce, since it generally does not come up. I am not really down with the pairing.  The *twist* that occurs during this vid? Not a big fan of that in my stories. Now that I've got all my negativity out of the way OMG I LOVE THIS VID SO MUCH.  I might be *obsessed* with it and really? Getting to see this vid on the bigscreen was one of the highlights of my con. Ferd just does an amazing job with what she does here that she spoon feeds me food I DO NOT LIKE and I am all "ooh, this is delicious and I want to eat it again and again!" What the hell, Ferd? HOW ARE YOU DOING THIS? 


Hollaback Girl (Community) --kuwdora  - Club Vivid Premieres
I believe this vid, y'all.  Also, kuwdora -- I've been watching her vids for a few years now and this year was a Very Good Year for her. Something in her process has Happened and it is very exciting to watch.

Freakum Dress (Batman) - sweetestdrain  and Motown Philly (Psych) -jarrow -- Club Vivid Premieres
Yes, both of these vids say right there in the credits that they were made for me. Trust me, these are both awesome vids, the dedication part just makes them better. Yeah. I might be smug. Also, earwormed now with a very strange Beyonce/Boyz II Men mashup.

Enter the Void (Enter the Void) - sockkpuppett - Club Vivid Premieres
This shit is bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S.  And then there is ovum.  So, while I approach this vid as a mood piece, I of course attempt to attach a narrative and that narrative? Is sooo disturbing to me.  So I end up being disturbed, but in the good way. I really want people to sit and watch this (because trust me, CVV was not the place to analyze) and figure out what we got from this. I'd pair it with Caged Bird but it isn't a set. I can't explain....HELP ME VERBALIZE IN COMMENTS PLZ!!!!

Dante's Prayer (Star Trek) - killabeez - Big Emotion Vidshow
This vid. This vid started my waterworks on Saturday of the con and I knew it would. I actually started to think, though, towards the end of the vid that it might not, this time. I actually started congratulating myself on control over my own body and this, THIS would be the year that I was able to watch "Dante's Prayer" without tears streaming down my face and a lump in my throat. Yeah. Big negative there. I was all "uh, uh, uh"ing away and fan_eunice hadn't even killed a dog yet.

No Man's Land (Tombstone) - mranderson71  - Go West, Young Vid! Vidshow
This vid was amazing. It is in my top three vids of the con. I know it wasn't a premiere but I had never seen it before so, yeah. EVERYTHING Mr. Anderson does here? I wanna do it too. In a vid about Tombstone. JUST THE WAY HE DID IT! Do you see what I mean? I have such a crush on this vid. Or maybe obsession. I can't tell. It's Tombstone!!!

Crawling Back to You (Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid) - radixiscat  - Go West, Young Vid! Vidshow
So. The Cowboys vidshow was not supposed to make me cry. I already had a sob-headache from Big Emotion. And then this vid, it was just so perfectly what I wanted from a Butch and Sundance vid with the sepia and the slashiness and the stuff. And then they were tired and I was all "Uh, uh, uh" but I HELD IT IN! I did.  I cried but noiselessly and it was a triumph. And then destina 's "Hurt" Brokeback Mountain vid came on immediately afterwards and that was all it took.  

Y'all...I was loud.

Caramelo (Miami Vice) - franzeska - VVC Premiere
Y'all franzeska was one of the vidders I was most looking forward to actually sitting down and talking with at VVC. And I did! I did get a chance to sit down and talk to her and it was waaaayyy to short of a time and she is fascinating. I am all about picking her brain. Not literally. That would be creepy. But metaphorical brain picking is imperative. This vid -- this is Miami Vice - but not what you expect and actually the expectation is a shame, ain't it? Also, I do wanna watch that show! I also wanna wear shoulder pads and pretty lingerie and fight crime. Stuff.

You Told All the Drunks I Knew Karate (Dr. Who) - settai - VVC Premiere
Oh, Rory. This vid makes me know you and love you and hurt for you and also root for you and kinda crush on you, there at the end. Rory is amazeballs and this song choice is perfect and this vid translates so so so well, even for a non-fan like me. The things that Rory will do for Amy? Let me show them to you.

Welcome Home (Friday Night Lights) - barkley - VVC Premiere
So. I might have cried at the blurb. "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose" and what the fuck is that, Barkley? ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL ME??? I want to grow up and learn how to make this vid. Once I can actually, you know, see it through all the tears.

Roll With the Changes (How to Train Your Dragon) -fan_eunice - VVC Premieres
So, I was kinda tired of the same old story so I turned some pages and I found out that Toothless and basically ALL DRAGONS would be here when I was ready to roll with the changes and omg I AM SO READY TO ROLL WITH THE CHANGES YOU HAVE NO IDEA!!!  This vid soars. Eunice is cool but nobody tell her I said that. She'll get all big-headed or worried that I am being nice to her.

Feel It In My Bones (Vampire Diaries) -greensilver  - VVC Premieres
So my favorite comment out of vid review was how this vid was effective from a "pelvic standpoint" and I cannot improve upon that other to agree. Whole, um, heartedly? Pelvically? Now this is getting a bit uncomfortable but still the point stands: this vid is smoking hot.

Don't Forget Me (Buffy) - obsessive24  - VVC Premieres
Lovely, evocative Riley study.  I knew I needed a Riley vid and then I got one during premieres and it was such a gift and there are parallels it draws and the framing is just so very interesting. Riley is Riley but then he is Buffy and Buffy is Riley. I KNOW! Go watch and figure out if you can write to the vidder and be all "I SEE WHUT YOU DID THARE!"

Sit Down By the Fire (Kings) --sweetestdrain -- VVC Premieres
How do I vid a fandom that few people know, include my biblical slash, and make it fairly clear, unsubtle, and also pretty? This vid is now my study guide for that question. I am eating out of this vid's palm and I don't think any of you are surprised.

One Foot Wrong (Batman Returns) - dualbunny - VVC Premieres
DB continues to edumacate me in ways to vid Pink, lurve on a movie I adore and include scenes of Michelle Pfieffer licking herself and make it all look natural. Yeah. Also, I didn't cry!!!


Land of Confusion (V-1983) - destina  and barkley  - Challenge
Apparently, they tried to deflect suspicion before the challenge show by telling people I made this vid. Okay! I ACCEPT! 

I made this vid and I worked really hard on it.

So, I know the source for V. This vid does stuff with that source that are jawdropping and I need to watch it a lot because there is some really smooth editing going on right here.

Walk This Way (Young Frankenstein) - cee_m -- Auction
I am so glad this vid exists. It makes me laugh and laugh and then I have to cross my legs because I am laughing so hard and I know that is TMI but it is also true! What a fantastic match up of source and song and just. It has heart (and possibly evil brains).


Oh, yeah. There was a Lex/Clark vid in Challenge that I might have liked. A little. It might have broken a part of me deep inside that might have been important. It might have created (and this is difficult to do in a vid) an original character called "Catbaby" and I know that deep in my soul one day she will find out her true Kryptonian Heritage and be named Kat-El.  I might be entirely too invested in all this and no, if you do not watch Smallville, Kryptonite Unicorns are not canon. But they should be. I think that was the confusion when we were discussing the vids. The SV people were too overwhelmed by the *rightness* of the Kryptonite Unicorns to actually correct the canonical assumption so I am sorry. Where am I? OMG YOU GUYS I DON'T THINK CATBABY CAN READ!!!

So yeah. Just so you know? I had no idea this was going to happen. NO IDEA! I did worry, in my drunken haze, on Saturday night that none of the above actually *liked* me anymore or maybe I was just getting on their nerves and so I did an entire rejection dance in my brain and then cornered people and made them listen to me talk about my job. Good times. Anyway, so I was pretty glad when greensilver asked me to sit with her during vid review and then actually seemed to want me to sit beside her -yay, people still like me! I had no idea. None. I almost didn't stay for the challenge show due to feeling poorly. What if I hadn't stayed? OMG. I cannot even bear considering that.

 

*By no means an accurate and thorough list -- this is just a quick recs of vids that popped into my head at this moment and/or OMG changed my life and I want you, the reader of this infrequently updated LJ, to actually make sure you see. I haven't watched all of Club Vivid yet, either or NonAttending Premieres so just go with what I got. Seriously. What are you waiting for? Me to finish my point? I don't ever finish my point and we've established this. Go! Go watch these vids.  I am over here watching My Little Pony on youtube.

Yay, recs! And I'm with you on wanting to get more involved in the vidding community... I realized during my panel that I really rarely engage in conversations about vidding outside of my teeny circle of vidder friends, and I would really like to. It's all about sharing knowledge with others and learning new things from others (*sigh!* if I must).

And my vote is for a literalism panel. Not just because of Keanu Reeves, but because except for your meta from years ago, I've never seen it addressed much beyond "Don't do it! Oh, but, do it sometimes." And it's definitely an issue that vidders have to face frequently.

What if I hadn't stayed?

I have thoughts about how this vid is related to Caged Bird! For my money, they both seem to be visual/auditory meditations on three-dimensional space incorporating everything from the geometric patterns of the observed environment to a deep exploration of the interiority and exteriority of spaces and the people in them...by the time Lum hits her groove in these vids, though, it feels like she's exploring fifth- or sixth-dimensional space somehow. Like, sure, we've all heard time described as a fourth dimension, but I'd like to add the fifth for, say, the hypnotic-but-shapely experience of the music in these vids and what it adds to the overall experience. And a couple extra dimensions to try to capture the multiple layers of three-dimensionality the vids are exploring...like, OK, in Enter the Void we get to explore the bright-light cityscape AND the interior spaces of rooms and dance clubs and hallways and tunnels and bedrooms AND the interior spaces of the human body in extreme close up (OVUM!) AND THEY ARE ALL ON THE SAME LEVEL, THERE IS NO DISTINCTION. Cling hard to your sense of perspective and your left-brain logical thinking and you can probably continue to distinguish each layer of exploration and mark it by category, but I think the vid demands that the viewer give into the EXPERIENCE and go with the flow. It's SEX, right? It's people fucking in the LOVE hotel and the sperm hits the ovum and tries to enter because that's what the sperm and ovum do. But in this vid all spaces are the void, the vagina, and the camera spins us in and out and around and through it to explore the totality of the act and of the human impulse, as embodied in the copulatory experience, which is everywhere and everything.* (Or possibly it is when some totally tripping painter imagines it all that way--yeah, I think there's a framing device in there, but you can take it or leave it--he's just another human being caught up in the experience.) With pretty lights and a great groove. Apparently, some dude made what I'm guessing is a pretty self-indulgent film about this, but I have to say I think I prefer Lum's condensed version.

So, if "Enter the Void" is the squirming-around-on-the-bed-in-a-sexual-haze version of the six-dimensional exploration of interiority and exteriority, then Caged Bird is the, well, caged bird exploration of it. The rigid, constrained version that just hints at the lushness of what is contained within. It does similar things with exploring the geometry of spaces (interior space of rooms and hallways and staircases and exterior spaces of patterned gardens, large hedges and giant statuary and minute spaces of patterned objects and human forms and echoed images all the way down/through in mirrors and photographs), forming them all into a meditation on place and space and mysterious, vaguely ominous relationships between the sexes.

So, obviously, I'm only scratching the surface of something huge in these vids, but there are some thoughts on the subject for you to ponder, anyway. ;)

Third, I was actually thinking it might be nice to have something next year like a Curse of the Silent Oboe panel for vidders who struggle with musical structure and beat like I used to until you and renenet and heresluck got hold of me. Some of the basic math and waveform tricks that are excellent cheats and such.

ANYWAY, yes, to everything you said up there and a vote for literalism but only if you use the saddest Keanu picture in the world in the picspam.
