[livejournal.com profile] linzeem has the best suggestion for curtailing these thieving asshats - stop offering wmv files.

Anybody want to walk me through the RM conversion process? Should I encode it directly from Premiere or should I run the AVI through a specific converter? How hard would it be for a dumbass to figure out how to convert RM to AVI or mpeg or wmv? Too hard to be worth it? Cause that is what I am looking for. Well that and a candy bar.

I'm gonna go lay down again.

Are you looking to convert from .mpeg or .avi, or from .wmv?

mpeg and avi are straight-forward - I use realproducer basic, which is free from real.com. It produces pretty nice quality as far as real goes, and the file size isn't all that high.

You can convert from .wmv as well, but there's a *little* (surprisingly little, actually) quality loss, and it takes longer. I got a nice thorough explanation from another vidder a while back that's lying around my hard drive, and I can probably dig that up for you if you want it.

As far as converting back...it can be done, but it's an enormous pain in the ass, and requires more hard drive space, programs, and technical knowledge than the average clip thief has. Plus, by the time the file's been converted back to mpeg, the quality loss is to the point where nothing's really discernable. It wouldn't be worth their time.

*offers a candy bar, too*

have you ever noticed a difference quality wise between exporting directly into RM vs exporting to AVI and then converting using Real Producer? I've seen some really crystal clear RMs and just haven't been able to duplicate the visual quality at similar kbps even from VCD qualility digital encodes... it seems like there must be some intermediary step or setting I'm missing...

I haven't noticed - I get the same quality whether I export from premiere, or from real producer - and it drives me nuts, lol. One day I'm going to suck it up and start begging the people who make those gorgeous rm files to tell me how they do it. *g*

I make the RM file right in Premiere, I think it's Export Timeline - Real Media Format. The transitions will look slightly different though, I actually like them better. It's actually pretty hard to correctly convert a RM to anything else. And the software (can't remember the name) won't work with Real One (which is what most people will have).

Hope that helps. Sorry you have to go through all of this.

I export in .rm directly from Premiere -- I'm happy to give you a walk-through of how I do it and what settings I use. I can send the info via e-mail, or just message me and I'll explain. It's as easy as .wmv.

Now I'm thinking about taking down my .wmvs too. Argh.
