I saw the bulletproof kink meme floating around in the last week or so and it got me to thinking: what is the one thing/plot element/dealio that will make me read a story, regardless of fandom or story quality?
And - see, you would think this would be an easy answer - wouldn't you? Anyone that knows me could just say "cave-in," pass go, and collect $200. I mean, I've read Bonanza fanfiction because there was a cave-in in it. But see, you'd be wrong. Because I never finished said Bonanza fic (because I am just not that interested in Adam, people. Hoss - absolutely. I can be shallow and go for Little Joe, even. Adam=Big Yawn even in a cave-in). Actually, given the right mood and weather conditions outside? I'd probably read Bonanza fic even without a cave-in. Well-written Bonanza stories, that is.
Sometimes, most of the time, hell ALL of the time - the quality of the story does matter. I have no kinks that can over-ride this one issue.
At least with written stories. I have come to realize, especially over this weekend - I have no such internal censors when it comes to movies/tv shows/vids.
If X has Z in it? I will watch it. I am not quite sure what Z is, exactly - but I think it has something to do with Jane Austen. Okay - for example: This weekend I watched an adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice" set in a Mormon College town. To say this movie is awful is an insult to the word awful. It was dreck. Poorly written, acted, paced dreck. It was one of the worst movies I have ever seen that didn't turn the corner into Lord King Bad Movie. It was just terrible. It was as if there existed a cover of Sarah Mclachlan singing "I Need A Hero" without irony and I watched 2 hours of earnest vids to it.
Even so? I watched the entire thing. I couldn't help myself. I have no defenses. I also watched "The Prince and Me" and I LOVED it. I feel a bit better about this one because Julia Stiles is intelligently likeable and a capable actress and the ending was so not typical for this type of movie. Yay following your heart AND dreams and realizing that you *are* your dreams! WHOOT!
I still hate Meg Ryan movies - that has to count for something.
Oh and I have to go home tonight and rewatch Blade:Trinity and possibly compose an LJ post because OMG that movie is just so terrible as to be extremely surreally rewarding. It replaces Resident Evil 2 as my favorite Lord King Bad Movie. I highly recommend it. I think I have to buy this DVD.
