I was reading at nytimes.com this morning about how Conservative groups and churches are adopting "March of the Penguins" as proof of intelligent design or family values or whatever.

I find myself for the first time in my life agreeing with George Will. Wait - no, there was another instance back in 1995 where he said something on This Week with David Brinkley and I could not disagree with it. I can't remember what that was, but I do know that it happened. Maybe it was about baseball?

Anyway, yes - I do think that penguins are fantastic creatures and have lovely and noble family values and act almost as if they had... souls, dontcha think? And also? There are totally gay penguins. I have proof. Well, I don't specifically have proof, but people reading this do and if I asked they would so totally post said proof in my comments.

So the next time a fundamentalist tries to tell me my dog does not have a soul, I will just let them go argue with these other fundamentalists because if penguins get souls, so do dogs. Yeah, dogs might be slutty and sometimes they are not good parents but I bet those penguins have lust in their hearts, or something.

So it's proof of family values that the mother goes off to work while the father stays home to raise the kid! Whoot!

Before I left on my trip last week, I quoted a passage from a recent National Geographic which described lonely penguins hitting on the film crew.

So now the fundies support cross-species mating?

Oh lord--I tried to picture what a lust-filled penguin would look like, and my brain exploded. Exploded, I tell you.

You rock. Someone should definitely get those fundamentalists on the phone.

These penguins have souls, and apparently a sense of whimsy.

The gay penguins have been immortalized in the children's book Tango, about the baby penguin raised by two daddy penguins, and thus named because it takes two to make a Tango. :D
