Once Again, Liz Go BOOM!
Aug. 8th, 2005 10:27 amSaturday, in what seems to me to be just scathing irony, I was on my way home from my company picnic when this car full of teenagers pulled out right in front of me. I braked but I really had nowhere to go and no time to stop - they were fully across the right lane, there was oncoming traffic to my left, so I just held steady and watched it happen.
Luckily - I did slow down significantly and I hit that car in the front driver side wheel-well, disabling it. I say luckily cause as soon as everything stopped, the kids in the other car jumped out and started running.
Oh, for joy.
What follows is me calling 911, the half dozen or so witnesses calling 911, a bunch of people calling in reporting on which direction the kids ran off (apparently the police caught up with several of the kids - I was unable to ID the driver, I barely saw his face and I was so relieved he wasn't dead that I didn't really memorize features). I was then covered in firemen but didn't have the good sense to appreciate the moment. DAMN IT.
I can't figure out what the universe is trying to tell me. This is the second time in a year I have been in an accident caused by an uninsured driver (just for your edification -- Kentucky is one of the only states in this region that does not offer property damage uninsured motorist insurance. Fun fact from me to you). Maybe I need to be more compassionate in my job? I am an insurance adjuster - I deal with this all the time, but hell, my customer sat. scores are 10s so I think I am already pretty damned compassionate. I don't need object lessons a week and a half before Vividcon.
Anyway - breaking it down: Front end damage on my car, not as bad as it initially looked and the tow guy was able to push down on the hood enough that I can drive it (maybe - I'm taking it in to a body shop in a minute so I know for sure)- I'd classify it as min/mod damage - I'll need a new hood and I doubt they can do a repair on the bumper so that will probably have to be replaced and I think I can do an aftermarket hood, but Buick Regal bumpers have to be OEM unless I can find a crash part (I'm still looking for a rear bumper to finish repairing the damage from the uninsured chick that rear-ended me last August). Lights look good, air compressor is making a funny noise, radiator appears intact. No fluid is leaking from the vehicle, airbags did not deploy (thank god) and I think that is it.
I was wearing my seatbelt so my back was completely stabilized by the seatback and my neck is just a teensy bit sore today. My ankle hurt yesterday but is fine now. My shoulder hurts from the seatbelt but that is to be expected. If it still hurts on Wednesday, I'll consider seeing a doctor that is not my sister.
Later today I will go downtown and pick up the police report and then I'll go by the county clerk to get information on the car I hit. I am pretty sure - based on experience - that there will not be active insurance on it. I'll call my insurance company. I'll do what I am supposed to do and luckily, I already know all of this. I am just tired of it.

Date: 2005-08-08 03:02 pm (UTC)Maybe the police will be able to sort something out and the kids' families will have to pay for your repairs? I suppose that might involve small claims court, though. Sheesh. It's so unfair.

Date: 2005-08-08 03:05 pm (UTC)I'm certainly glad that you are all right and am very sorry about your car.
Darned kids!

Date: 2005-08-08 03:06 pm (UTC)Good part: lots of witnesses. I wonder if any of the kids will break under interrogation, and reveal the name of the driver, who is maybe under 18, and you can sue the bejeezus out of his parents or something.
I'm glad you're mostly okay. Hope you don't have to see a doctor who is not your sister.
If I were there, I'd fluff your pillows, fan you with palm fronds, and make sure there's lots of ice for tea or lemonade, and I'd bring you tiny sandwiches of the sort that are refreshing in summertime.

Date: 2005-08-08 03:30 pm (UTC)The witnesses help in many many ways but this will still end up being a filed claim on my insurance and that is never a good thing.

Date: 2005-08-08 05:22 pm (UTC)I guess the real tragedy was this: I was then covered in firemen but didn't have the good sense to appreciate the moment. DAMN IT.
So sad.
;)
Still, glad you're okay.

Date: 2005-08-08 07:52 pm (UTC)And say, what is it with hot = fireman = hot, anyway? Is it written into the job description? (With a rider that whenever possible, said Hot Fireman must wear a flatteringly snug T-shirt?)
See you soon! And All Hail Lord King Bad Vid!

Date: 2005-08-09 07:25 pm (UTC)Hey - I got your email and the the world exploded, but I should be totally free in late August. Just let me know what you need and where it is (ep and generalized area "Miss Scarlet in the Library with a Blowtorch" kind of directions) and I'll get it to ya!
