Cappy starts college next year and the one thing we have learned about this child is that she is hard - very hard, on laptops. So, she will need a new one and it will need to be sturdy and while I am leaning toward getting her an iBook (she will have a student discount! And she can't get a Powerbook cause I will just steal it!) she wants a Toshiba pen tablet.

I have a portege for work and I do like it -- I just don't know that it could stand up to her. I mean, it is really sturdy - a lot sturdier than I thought it would be - but I still think she could rip it apart given 3 days and a deadline. The pen-function, which is a nice thing to have, is hardly ever used by me except as a mouse replacement.

So - laptop rec's for students would be a nice thing to have (if she buys the iBook now she could get a free iPod mini! - all students reading this need to check it out at apple.com). It needs to be tough first and foremost and then it needs to be somewhat powerful and now it is sounding like my requirements for a leading man. OMG! Cappy's new computer could be Angel! Actually - her new computer needs to be Seth Bullock.

I've *cough* dropped my iBook more than once. It just keeps going and going.

Thank you -yeah, I do intend to get the apple care plan, just cause if it can break, it will break while around her.

I went and looked at them during lunch and I really think she will like it a lot.

I really like my Toshiba tablet, except for the part where the hard drive keeps crashing and needs a full restart from CDs. I don't think it's reliable enough yet for a student who might have a paper due. My iBook is years old and still lovely and sturdy. I don't think the convenience of the tablet is worth the agony of Windows.

Yes - we've had a lot of problems with the hard drives (Toshiba is supposed to have fixed that by now). I am pushing for an iBook.

I have an iBook. The thing has been through the trenches, I'm telling you. Dropped, water spilled on it, abused by toddlers... it's the Timex of laptops. I've never had trouble with it.

If she wants a PC, rather than an apple, you might want to look at vaios. They're overpriced if purchased directly from Sony, but the little 3 1/2 pound one I bought... 3 1/2 years ago, now, is seriously damn sturdy. This would be the metal-cased ones, not the larger, plastic ones, and I too purchased it so I wouldn't be so easily able to destroy it... It has taken a few bad blows, and is still going strong.

Thank you - good to know there are strong PC options.

::blinks:: is this the one that has the docking station? 'cause if so, that's the same one I have. I've fallen asleep while typing on the couch and it fell to the floor several times and was dropped a couple times (people I was lending it to, it was named the crackho for good reason), but it still works...

DUDE!!! Between the dude *driving* on his iBook and your stories of your own laptop - I am afraid. Hee. But it is good to know that it isn't just Cappy. I swear that girl destroys things just by looking at them.

but I just fell asleep! not my fault that I rolled over and shoved the silly thing to the floor! ;D

And ... yeah, no one knows quite why he was driving over his laptop, something for a student film or something. There a hairline crack down the middle, but you can still see stuff on the screen clearly on both sides of the crack... =D

I seventeenth the notion of the iBook. I got a G3 in 2000, it took all sorts of beatings (including a year at college), and my stepmom has taken it over since I got my G4 just a few weeks ago.

Also, my G4 is so terribly shiny and wonderful. And, IMO, it's just prettier than a Windows machine. :)

It *is* prettier.

To chime in with the others: if you're going for sturdyness, then probably the iBook. A classmate ran over the laptop in his huge yuppie jeep of DOOM and it still works. =)

from apple.com/powerbook

Takes the Fall

Now every PowerBook G4 is equipped with Apple's Sudden Motion Sensor to help protect your most valuable asset: your data. The Sudden Motion Sensor senses change in axis position and accelerated movement. In the event of a drop or fall, the Sudden Motion Sensor instantly parks the hard drive heads so they won’t scratch the disks on impact, lessening the risk of damage and improving your chances of retrieving valuable data. When the Sudden Motion Sensor senses your PowerBook is once again level, it unlocks the hard drive heads automatically.

That is OMG SO COOL!!! I want that one!!!

NO!!! You can't have a powerbook. If anyone in this family is getting a powerbook it is ME.

No - you want a tiny little 12 inch iBook - so cute!!! Also - look, it is like made of bullet-proof material. You'll love it.
