I have spent a lot of time this weekend thinking about a certain season 5 AtS casting spoiler. I have actually thought of little else since I heard this spoiler. I may actually lose my job if I don't figure out how to concentrate any time soon.
I've been working through this theory over at the WeBoB forums - I mention that forum often here because that is where my bitter ass hangs out so much -
http://www.bandofbuggered.com/forum/index.php
I recommend the S/X fanfic club (and video bootcamp, obviously).
Speculation about AtS season 5 and that spoiler - I really think everyone knows, but just in case - I cut
I have no idea how BtVS will end. In the shipper race, I am rooting for S/A (obviously) - but I have a hunch that whatever happens - in the end Spike will be devastated. He is Spike. Devastation comes naturally to him. No spoiler there. He needs someone to take care of him. Enter Angel.
I want the beginning of the season to be just that - Angel taking care of everyone. Wes (cause in my imagination he was severely wounded in the AtS season finale) needs pretty much round the clock assistance, Angel has to drive Connor to therapy and there is talk about enrolling him in school (his therapist doesn't think he is quite ready yet, but thinks regular interaction with peer-mates may be good for him), Cordy I haven't figured yet - so I'm ignoring her presence at this time, and then there is Spike. Spike is not very time-consuming, but at odd moments of the day Angel feels his attention drifting toward him, even as he helps Wes dress or he discusses business plans with Lorne. Angel also needs distraction and Spike's presence is much needed.
Spike has a room at the Hyperion. It is on the same floor as Angel's room, but not in the same wing. No one else is nearby. Angel is the only one that will go to see Spike. He brings him blood and books and while Spike will drink the blood, but he never touches the books. Spike only leaves the room with Angel, and then only if Angel has something for them to go and kill. He is quiet and rarely speaks. Angel is the only one that tries to talk to him. Sometimes he babbles and at those times he is stricken with the absurdity of the situation. Spike doesn't seem to register much of anything.
Gradually, Spike begins to regain focus - he comes out of the shock of grief a bit more. This is when the danger begins. Spike is not insane - but he is suicidal. Normally Angel is able to channel his self destruction into productive demon-fighting. Sometimes, when Angel knocks on Spike's door in the middle of the afternoon there is no answer. Angel never hesitates to open the door - and he removed the lock along time ago. If the door was ever barricaded he would tear it off its hinges. It never is ... it always swings open when he turns the knob. He knows he will see Spike seated near the open window in the shadows, just staring at the sun motionless. He always makes sure to find something for Spike to kill when this happens.
Let me explain something - I have been watching "Lethal Weapon II" all weekend long. I love a good buddy flick and LWII fits the bill on so many levels. Plus, there is the love, man. The love. Damn.
Spike is Martin Riggs. Angel is Roger Murtaugh. Feel the love. Dude - I am seriously feling this dynamic today - maybe its the hang-over, maybe I have finally gon around the deep end - but I even went and looked up the screenplay for "Lethal Weapon" - get this descriptor: "Roger is tough: An old-fashioned fighter, wears his past like a scar. Piercing eyes; cynical." - well of course that is Angel.
Spike will start interacting with the group more - but Angel is his main focus. He irritates Angel no end and Angel may actually play up his pissy reaction, because it is just so nice that Spike is actually engaging in something now - even if that hobby is annoying the undead hell out of Angel.
At some point I want the scene where Murtaugh discovers just how truly insane Riggs is (from the first Lethal Weapon movie) played out Angel v. Spike - Angel knows Spike is on edge but he just has to discover how much - how far is Spike willing to take it?
So, um - if you are interested - here is a snippet of the script from Lethal Weapon - and all you really have to do is replace Murtaugh with Angel and Riggs with Spike when you read. Oh - and probably replacing Roger's gun with something more lethal to vampires -
And so on, screaming and ranting -- As a uniformed cop
cuts Riggs free with a set of clippers. Riggs stands
shakily. Steps away from the net. And there is Roger
Murtaugh. Visibly upset. Did I say upset? I meant enraged.
He grabs Riggs, slams him against the wall. Tries to grab
his collar. Riggs’ hand shoots out. Lightning fast. Stops
Murtaugh’s hand. Stops it cold. They stare into each
other’s eyes.
RIGGS
Don’t ... touch me.
Murtaugh will not back down.
MURTAUGH
What the fuck did you just do???
RIGGS
I controlled the jump. You wanted him
down. He’s down.
MURTAUGH
C’mere.
He yanks Riggs around the corner, away from the other cops.
MURTAUGH
Okay, turkey, no bullshit. Do you want
to kill yourself?
RIGGS
Aw, for Chrissake ...
MURTAUGH
Shut up. Just yes or no, do you want to
die? Huh? Yes or no?
RIGGS
I got the job done.
MURTAUGH
You’re not answering the question!!!
RIGGS
(angry)
What do you wanna hear, man?
You wanna hear that I got a bottle of
pills in my room? I do. Every day I
wake up, I look for a reason not to
take them. Doing the job, that’s ...
that’s the reason.
Murtaugh looks at him. Nods. A moment, then:
MURTAUGH
You want to die.
RIGGS
I’m not afraid of it.
MURTAUGH
Here.
(unholsters his gun)
Pills are too slow. Use a gun.Use my
gun. Go ahead, pal.
A pause. Riggs looks at the gun.
MURTAUGH
Be my guest.
He offers the gun to Riggs.
MURTAUGH
Go ahead. If you’re serious.
Riggs smiles, takes the gun without missing a beat. Puts it
to his head. CLICK -- ! The hammer is cocked. Murtaugh and
Riggs stare each other down. Tense. Reading each other.
RIGGS
You shouldn’t tempt me, Roger.
MURTAUGH
Put it in your mouth. Bullet goes in
your ear, might not kill you.
Meanwhile, in the b.g., pedestrians are diving for cover.
Murtaugh and Riggs are oblivious. Riggs puts the gun under
his chin.
RIGGS
Under the chin’s just as good.
They stare at each other. Riggs’ finger begins to tighten
on the trigger. Turns white with pressure. It looks like
he’s going to do it. At the last second, Murtaugh jams his
thumb in front of the hammer, and CLICK Jesus ...
The hammer thuds against his thumb. Murtaugh grabs the gun.
Stares at Riggs, wild-eyed.
I realize that I have lost my mind - but work with me here.
Remember the toilet scene in "Lethal Weapon II"? - I want something like that - only probably without the toilet. Angel is facing something bad and scary and has to do it alone, because of the danger. I want everyone ordered out - and Spike to refuse. Okay - watch the movie - there is a moment when Riggs is told that they are going to set off the bomb - clear out. And he just looks at the bomb squad guy and his refusal is so clear and the expression in his eyes is such a "don't fuck with me" expression that I die. I just die. Spike would so have that look. Down to the color of the eyes - wow. Maybe Spike needs a light brown and curly late eighties Mel Gibson semi-mullet? Not quite the mulletude of a Richard Marx - but more rakish and bad boy wannabe. I think it is time for a new look for Spike - I mean - for better or worse, Angel's hair at least changes with the decade. Perhaps now is the time for Spike to join the eighties. Anyhoo - that whole moment the fellas have where they laugh kinda frantically then it gets serious and there is a lot said with the eyes- I wanna see that. Yep. That would be very nice.
Also - I want for there to be a moment where Spike's death wish is almost fulfilled (ya'll should be thankful I couldn't find the screen play for Lethal Weapon II online cause then I would be quoting that as well). And the guy/demon, whatever that just cut Spike down is all in Angel's face and sneering, "Diplomatic Immunity" or Demonic Immunity - doesn't really matter and Angel is all "It's been revoked!'
So then Angel rushes to Spike and is cradling his beaten and bloody pulp of a body - perhaps fearful that he will go all dusty at any moment and he says, "You are not dead until I tell you, you got that Riggs, er I mean Spike. You are not dead until I tell you." I am aware that the vampires are already dead and this scene does not make much sense in that regard, but then the gun and toilet scenes do not make that much sense either. Stop being all analytical, you're bringing me down man. Okay - so Angel is all, "You are not dead until I tell you." and then Spike coughs up blood and asks for a cigarette and Angel gets him one and Spike says"I want you to throw those things away, those things will kill you." and Angel is all "You son of a bitch": but he is really happy and Spike is all, "I didn't die on your toilet, I'm not gonna die in your arms." and then Angel assures him that all the bad guys are gone "They've been decaffeinated." and Spike starts laughing and then crying cause it hurts to laugh and he tells Angel, "You know you really are a beautiful man. Give us a kiss." and we fade to black on the two laughing.
Yeah - that is kinda what I want. Only more nekkid. And better.

Let me try with my favorite movie: Hobson's Choice becomes Angel's Choice. Instead of Brenda de Banzie and John Mills, Angel goes down into the cellar where Spike is forced to make shoes under horrible conditions for the evil, drunken shoemaker. Angel tells Spike that the two of them are destined to be together, even though Spike is already promised to an unworthy slut who perceives his talent and wants to take advantage of him . . .
Why isn't this working? Either I have crappy taste in movies or I lack Sisabet's genius. I suspect the latter, because I remember you successfully slashed characters into Bringing Up Baby and Philadelphia Story.
BTW, I think Tara is still alive. So whisper when you discuss that Tara's dead stuff in front of me.
