This is not the week to be messing with me - ya know. So I just have to share this with you guys - cause really, it is to laugh and all.

And I am *really* having a hard time navigating this MSN site so I can find an email address.

So anyway - settiai alerted us all to this place that was hotlinking vids she and Lum and I have all made. So I go over there ready to just tear someone apart cause really - fuckers need to go down and I am spoiling for a fight.

The vids are here - notice how she ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO STREAM VIDS OFF SOMEONE ELSE'S BANDWIDTH!! The FUCK! Notice how she links to all these vids (directly) and never once thinks to mention the vidder by name. And then - my favorite part of all -- at the very bottom of the page she says:

So I get there and I am mad and I am looking and I am all hot to trot and I see this:

Oookay - so this is soo not correct cause look - music video page - but anyway (maybe she stole her disclaimer?) what is really really - just extremely funny to me is right under her disclaimer box she says:

Slay Me provides you with BTVS and ATS information, games, activites, ect. If you have any intentions on copying, hacking, or stealing anything off this site, we will report you.

Buh huh? Shaggy says what? THE HELL?? SHE IS HOTLINKING A PAGE FULL OF VIDS!!

Gah.

And so I search and search for one freaking email address and I can't find it and I have work to do and all because someone has to pay for all this bandwidth (and yes I am exaggerating - we all know that Dawn pays for the site - BUT HEY - SHE HAS TO WORK FOR THE MONEY TOO!! AND SHE HAD TO WORK TODAY AND SHE IS STILL NOT OVER THE FLU AND MAYBE IF IT WASN'T FOR INCONSIDERATE AND SPOILED CHILDREN SHE COULD TAKE AN EXTRA SICK DAY! And okay that is me just being over-dramatic again, but now I am all addicted! ::swoons::)

And I still can't find an email but I do find out that this chickadee is 14 and in so much love with James Marsters that it hurts and so now I can't, you know, kill her. But I do need to educate her apparently and NOW IS NOT THE TIME FOR ME TO BE PATIENT and I can't even find a fricking email address and I am really really tired of this site right now.

THIS - this is why I hide from newbies.

ETA: The vid page is down! Whee! She has taken it down and responded to some emails and I am *not* obsessively checking my in box.

I am also not watching Smallville and yet the episode is *right* here and I heard there was tied up Lex torture and I am such a sucker for that. Maybe I am depressed?

I used to have all sorts of problems with people linking directly to my vids and graphics, and I had to go kick some newbie ass at least once every month or so. Then I finally broke down and learned how to write an .htaccess file, and ever since then - presto! No more hotlinking!

Here (http://www.netcode.net/tutorials/general/stop_hotlinking.php) is a very basic explanation of what .htaccess is and how to write a simple script. You can also just google ".htaccess" and "hotlinking" and find lots of other tutorials.

If you decide to use .htaccess, I can help you write the file and upload it to your site. (Or, since you're having trouble in that area, you could pester Dawn and get her to upload it for you.)

I realize this doesn't solve the larger problem of people being jackasses and acting like they are entitled to your art. But it's still nice to not have to worry about it happening to you anymore. :)

I just got a response to my email:

"Thank you for informing me of this issue, that I was not aware of... Now that I am informed on that this is costing the vider's money and causing issue, I will remove the ones that I did not get premission for. I will also inform my friend about this manner, and ask them to stop direct linking the videos without premission. I am sorry for any trouble this has cost you, and others."

There's a long bit that I cut about it's not really stealing because she said the vids weren't hers, and also how it's really her "friend" who did this -- yeah, uh-huh, whatever -- but the main thing is that she seems to have gotten the hint; and the page is now down.
