sisabet: (Angel - reac out and touch)

For the first time in my life I am vidding a song I haven't yet listened to on repeat a thousand times. This song has never found its way into my car. I know the song - I mean, I have to know it in order to vid it, but I've never been obsessed with it.

And it is fairly popular as well. And just - there are so many reasons I shouldn't vid it and yet... the first time I heard it I was all offhand "Oh, this song is all about Angel" and actually I think that about every song and then the song has to prove to me it isn't about Angel and the second time I heard it, I was all "Oh, this song isn't about Angel - it is about everyone else."

And so when I got my S5 discs and felt this rush of wanting to say something about what happened and who it happened to - well, there was that song, sitting in the back of my head, being all interesting and attractive and seductive and making me want to hop into a relationship without even buying me dinner! Hell - we haven't even gone out for drinks yet and we are already flagging down a justice of the peace.

This is just all kinds of weird. Add to it - I think this is the first Angel vid I have ever done that is actively and quite forcefully not about Angel. Even the Lilah vid was about how she beat Angel. Wow.

Oh, and I still can't rewatch Not Fade Away and I am trying my best to delay clipping it.

It's kind of cute, really, your little fling with this vid. It's like you went to a party and started dancing and flirting and before you knew it time was moving all out of whack and you were flying high.

I am quite worried that someone - perhaps you - put the whammy on me and I am like Fred S5 and just deciding that dating Wesley is a very good idea, without the ability to remember that, no, no she has good and valid proof that dear boy is Just Not Stable and she should stay Far Far Away.

Of course, to be fair to Wes, he never even really got a chance to have a mental break the five minutes he was actually with Fred (but if it had gone to ten, I have faith in my insane nutso boy). Yeah, Wes didn't fully Lose It until Fred died in horrible pain as her soul was burned up (and I STILL WANT SOMEONE FROM ANGEL TO ANSWER FOR THAT! How - *how* can you burn up a soul?)and he had to hang out all the freaking time with her animated demi-god corpse. Like ya do.

Now last night I thought a lot about Wes and Fred. Tonight I want to think about Lorne and Gunn and get settled on where and what happens before the song breaks (that is currently the slowed pan from Fred's convulsing body on the stairwell) and come back and show aftermath in the ending of the song. "We all float on, okay" and show how this is just *never* gonna work and why what happens to Fred - how it motivates every single one of them to join Angel in a suicide mission. And they do it because... well why not?

Oh and we are going into that mindwipe box for memories - that might take a while to get cause I am not quite sure how to work the effect to get the exact look I want... but I'll figure it out. Just -- where you see the box in the vid outline now - know that eventually something is gonna end up in it.

Well...if I *did* put the whammy on you it was accidental, like Willow in Something Blue, only my boyfriend didn't just leave me and I'm not sorry and won't be baking anyone cookies.

The moment when the song breaks is going to be awesome. I know that the box stuff is TBA. We're going to have to have a discussion about the combination of your usual fast cuts and the sped up stuff to make sure the vid isn't too epilepsy-in-a-box (I mean, more than usual) and because things might need to breathe more, like, you know, some of the parts you have already where it's breathing. But it's too soon for that conversation now, I know. Just keep working out the story and laying clips.

well the sped up and slowing down parts are *very* difficult for me to do because I am so ingrained to *not* let a clip go - to cut it - and if I *have* to let it go, then to break it up and intercut it with something similiar or contrasting or that will highlight what is going on in this clip.

And AtS has some *great* long cuts. I just have to be comfortable dealing with a clip that is longer than 3 seconds.

Ooh! Growing as a vidder by rethinking ingrained habit! Breaking up clips by intercutting with other clips is *one* strategy (or set of strategies, since there are variations on this idea) to create visual interest, build layers of meaning, and work with the sound of the music. Manipulating the speed and/or direction of a single clip achieves those same objectives, but with a different feel — one that seems to work well with this music. So does the use of added effects and transitions that you may end up using in this vid. Of course, all three of these strategies and many others can be made to work within the same vid.

This vid is an excellent opportunity to practice keeping your eye on the objectives rather than the default method. I think you can feel safe in exploring new strategies because, ultimately, they'll help you do the same thing you were really trying to do in the first place. It's like taking a different route to work in the morning because the regular one has construction going on; when you don't know an alternative route it can be scary to make one up, but after you've tried it a few times you've got a solid Plan B and maybe it takes you by a really good donut shop to boot. Then you can pick the way you go depending on your immediate needs forever after. Repeat with Plans C, D, etc.

I know what you mean. Every song I hear is about Brian and/or Justin. It's a plague, I tell you! A PLAGUE!! I need to freakin move on.

It is hard - I know. But you can work with it.

This is what I do. Accept that this song is about Angel (or in your case Band/orJ). Once I accept that it is about Angel, then I need to know -- can I *prove* it to other people? And is it in the songs best interest? Once I get to the song's best interest part I can generally listen to more than the chanting mantra of "Angel, Angel, Angel" in my head and figure out what *else* the song is about.

Because, really, It is All Angel.
