Coincidentally, I also have just been watching the Deadwood DVDs with the commentary tracks. DM is certainly an interesting bird. ("That Timothy Olyphant is a good looking fella. If I were that good looking, I'd never work an honest day in my life.")
I haven't gotten to the featurettes yet. *g* Keith Carradine with Molly Parker is very cool, though.
Oh, if you're interested in RL Deadwood and what's real in the show and what isn't, can I suggest a book called The Real Deadwood? I was writing a Deadwood story for yuletide, and went looking for research material on the history and just happened to find this. It's a tie-in book which talks about the history of the town, but all the prominent people and character types featured in the show. It's a fun read and was a lot of help for me. For instance, I knew that Seth was a real person and that he was the first sheriff of the town, but I had no idea all the things he did in his life before he got to Deadwood. Or that he was sheriff for something like 40 years. And I figured Sol was just a made up character, but he was real and pretty interesting in his own right. (Also, it warmed my heart to see it mentioned--several times--that they were life-long partners. *happy sigh* I'm so pathetically a slash fan.)
Oh - they talked in the featurettes about how moral and smart and confirmed bachelor-y Sol was and I was just all "Ohhhh" and my heart overflowed, y'know?
I just - I haven't listened to the commentaries yet, but watching the featurettes, I just felt that moment of connection where Milch is talking about what he wanted to get across -- and that is exactly what I *got* and there is great *joy* in successful communication like that, you know?
