I should be hunkered down working now, trying to make the mess that is my desk a bit more bearable, but I had a semi-productive morning and hell I need a break. It isn't as if I am taking a lunch break today (since I plan on leaving 11/2 hours early I probably shouldn't brag). I think I am in a pissy mood. Can I rant here instead of to clients? Of course I can - this is my LJ. Whew. Glad that is settled.

Yesterday, I took a statement from a witness to an automobile accident. During the statement I asked what one of the driver's actions were after said accident. The witness, bless his heart, said, "Well he kind of walked over to the curb and sat down and he seemed like he was all full of shock and awe." I did not laugh and he seemed unaware of what he said. A testament of how much time I spend on LJ was when my first thought was of anniesj rather than Donald Rumsfeld. I feel better now. Thank you LJ!!

I gave J. some money and instructions on what to buy me for lunch. He just left. I should have food in about an hour. Yay!

You know what fills me with shock and awe in fandom lately? The amount of Angel-bashing that has been going on lately. I mean, I typically hang out on a Spike-Centered board, so I can expect it here and there, but my god, it has gotten fairly virulent of late (and not just there). I understand that some people hate the character and want to express their hatred. Fine, whatever. You know what I hate? People who have never seen more then 4 episodes of Angel prior to this year acting as god damned experts and in their expert opinion Angel is an asshole. Fucker. You don't know shit about mah man so back off or I will cut you! Or something along those lines would be my reaction if I wasn't so fucking classy. When did the directive come down that if you are a Spike fan it is a requirement that you hate all things Angel? Cause I missed that memo. Hell, the thing about Spike I hate the most is the insanity of some of his fans. I really shouldn't hold it against him, that isn't fair.

What was my point? Oh yeah - try watching something before condemning it. When I was a freshman, NYPD Blue premiered. It was a big deal and the ABC station in Lexington, Ky (where I went to college) actually had a call-in campaign regarding whether or not they should show this godless program. You could vote. The good citizens of Lexington declined to watch such a raunchy show. Of course as soon as the ratings took off, the ABC station decided to air it anyway. Hee. AtS is a great series, it is much better than almost any other drama airing and next year it promises to be the only damned show I like still on the air. I had more to say but it makes even less sense than that so I'm just gonna post.

Can I just add my a-fuckin'-men to this statement? There are a couple of lists that I frequent (they shall remain nameless, but they rhyme with Laps and BlabulaRasa), and you'd think that Angel is the fuckin' antichrist. Well, maybe he is, and wouldn't that be a promotion, BUT. BUTTTTTT... All the majority of these people know about Angel came to a screaming halt at the end of S3 BTVS. I know I'm in the minority on those two Spike-centered lists, but every now and then, I just explode into a rant about it. I can accept not liking a character. I can too!! But it just pisses me off big time when there's this blanket, free-range hatred of something they don't even know about. Watch the fuckin' show and then feel free to rant all you want. Ignorant ranting bugs me more than Angel hatred. A really informed, erudite statement of hatred? That would be entertaining and commanding of respect.

Wordy McWord. I'm a Spike fan, but I love my Angel very dearly, and hate to see him bashed by people who don't watch the fricking show! And yeah, I'm an enormous hypocrite since I joined in the bashing when BOB turned into the B/A board for a week while Valerie was away, but I meant it in the spirit of fun :)

I was totally behind the BoB B/A and B/R turn while Valerie was away - I admit mainly because I got to use some way pretty B/A icons that I had been saving. Also - more Angel to look at is always a good thing and I kind of enjoyed the pro-focus we had for that wonderful week. Ahhh... halcyon days of yon...

I am convinced that looking at Angel steadily will only put you under his spell. I am certain that more then one BoB lady fell into his his thrall after that week.

I'm down and dirty with the Angel love, sisabet. Partly due to your influence, partly due to finally watching S1 on dvd, and partly because this season kicks so much ass. But I've always liked Angel, the character. I just didn't care for Angel the Series. But the character? Come on. His story in S1-3 of Buffy was incredibly compelling. Do I love Spike and want Buffy to have him up against a wall? You bet. But that doesn't change how much I love Angel, on BtVS, and on his own show.

next year it promises to be the only damned show I like still on the air.

I'm really scared it won't get renewed. Hold me and tell me it's all gonna be okay?

I think a lot of the Angel hatred from Spike fans, and conversely, a lot of the Spike hatred from B/A fans, stems from the fact that some people refuse to see Spike and Angel as anything other than competing suitors for Buffy's twue lurve. They want Buffy to choose the vamp they've chosen for themselves, and feel the need to rip the other to pieces to justify the choice.

All this bickering and irrational, uninformed hatred between the two sides could be easily alleviated if more of them would just come to see the beauty of Spike/Angel- the truest OTP.

The only board I hang out at is TWoP, where the regulators keep a pretty tight leash on everyone, but still, the rabid single-mindedness of many Spike fans is positively frightening. And don't even get me started on the number of Angel-bashing, Spike-worshipping fics I've seen...What is it about Spike? I don't particularly like him myself, but I don't dislike him because I like Angel, you know? I've never seen anything like the levels of fan-obsessiveness that Spike creates, and I have no idea WHY it is.

And why has there been a sudden increase in Angel-bashing? I don't get it. My poor guy. Ah well, I'm sure kita will be willing to 'comfort' him if necessary...

Word. People who can't appreciate multiple characters annoy me. I've seen more Spikefans doing Riley-bashing than Angel-bashing (my sheltered life...), but either way, it's annoying.

Admittedly, I'm not a huge Angel-fan -- but that's merely a lack of interest, and it doesn't entitle me to get all vitriolic. Quite the opposite; as you point out, if I haven't seen the show, seen the character's post-BtVS development, I'm really not in a position to judge.

Yeah, imagine how hard it is for me - being a Spike fan and a Riley fan, at the same time. Dare to say that out loud anywhere (like those two lists Lum mentioned) and you get people bearing down on you with all their might, telling you that Riley was a Nazi and he was badbadbad and wrongwrongwrong and evil and he staked our Spikey so don't try to tell us to feel bad for Riley 'cos he went to vamp hos, blahblahblah bitchcakes.

I mean, I'll be the first to admit it, I snark about characters on the show, but it's due more to the frustrations I'm feeling because of the way the storyline is going (or isn't going), rather than out of any sincere hatred or anger on my part, regardless of what I might say otherwise, in the heat of the moment.

Honestly, I don't mind Angel as a character all that much... I like Wes more, though, and he's why I watch AtS. And yeah, I know, it's not The Wes Show, but in my happy little delusional head, it pretty much is. Same goes for Spike on Buffy - it may not be The Spike Show, but it pretty much is, for me.

The one thing that really bothers me, these days, is the shippers, man... some of them are getting Spawn Ranch scary - both B/Aers and S/Bers alike. I just imagine them sitting in a corner, rocking back and forth, tugging at their hair, and fanwanking their little hearts out with all the new spoilers they read, going, "But it'll be okay. It'll be okay! They'll be together and will be forever and always and it'll be all right. Yes."
