So I have been procrastinating watching the vid I was assigned to review at Boot Camp (sorry Kimera, er...whatever your new LJ name is now, I'll get it eventually) mainly because I thought it was a Spuffy vid and I did not want to watch any more Spuffy vids until I finished the first draft of "Essence." I go home at lunch today to watch it and it isn't a Spike/Buffy vid at all. It couldn't be farther from that if it tried. I suck. Now I wonder where I got that it was S/B...? I'm planning on finishing that review and [livejournal.com profile] kitkatbyte's new X/B vid tonight (Wendy submitted it to Boot Camp -Yay!!)- I'm also dying to get some feedback to [livejournal.com profile] linzeems for "Downfall" and maybe a flying tackle for [livejournal.com profile] vyra because of "Sleep Alone" - it sucks that vids I watch avidly I haven't yet provided any feedback - wait, I have already established that I suck, this is just more evidence.

Meanwhile, [livejournal.com profile] mrmonkeybottoms??? Where do you think you are going young lady? I have seen neither hide nor hair of you for an eternity now! How goes the vid? How goes the fic? How goes?

Harrumph. Is this why you didn't answer my IM?

And from what I've seen of 'Essence', I know you could make it Spuffy. But it could also be a tale of how Spike and Buffy each, in their own way, strive for heroism -- sort of paralleling their struggles.

I am having IM forgetfulness and I am leaving the little doodad up all the time - I will always answer you, though. Maybe not today and maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life.

How goes the move? Do you need me to help pack/unpack?

Yes. You can start in the kitchen; I'll supervise. I even bought boxes.

I was just wondering...how do you go about finding a song to vid to? Most of the songs you use seem to be kind of obscure, so is it just that you like those kinds of songs anyway, or do you specifically look for songs to use in your videos?

yes.

Hmmm... I listen to a bluesy, country, alt station here in Memphis that I adore. It is almost like the songs and artists were all picked especially for me. That helps - especially since I can't tolerate high doses of top 40 (but oddly enough I adore "Jenny from the Block" - did you know she used to have a little and now she has a lot? It is true). I have always liked a fair variety of genres - mainly artists regardless of genre that I feel have a unique view, or a wonderful voice or honesty or are just really really fantastically pretty (hence I love Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams, Sade, Eminem and Justin Timberlake).

Sometimes I'll hear something and just be slammed with how it should become a vid - the experience is almost visceral and really really cool. That is how "Cowboy," "Clint Eastwood" and "Lose Yourself" (unfinished Farscape vid) were - I just saw them at a certain point and I had to stop everything and make that vid. That is my favorite way for inspiration to hit because it really does all the work - the entire time you are laying clips it is almost a frenzy because you are in the zone and now you are just trying to get what you see in your head onto the hard drive. Of course, I learned the hard way, a separation from a vid during this stage could be deadly - witness "Lose Yourself"'s unfinshed status.

Sometimes I will like a song and want to vid it and listen to it over and over again until I find an angle to exploit - "Everybody Went Low" was like that. I have a John Hiatt thing and I really liked his new album and I liked the song... unfortunately just because you have a great song doesn't mean that the vid will be great and I think this was the case that proves that point.

"Closer" was a vid that was suggested to me and it was probably more difficult because I had to search, albeit not very hard, for the inspiration. The angle developed slowly and with many IM conversations with Miss Muchison - she fed me poetry and eventually I realized that (in this vid) neither of my pretty vamps can be saved - their search for redemption and meaning and acceptance are beautiful and tragic because it will ultimately be fruitless for both of them - that they are bound by love and hate and fate to the exact same destiny and no one can escape and do they even want to? I love stuff like that - but the vid was a difficult one to make and required loads and loads of hand-holding and help.

At this point I cannot listen to a song without mentally thinking "can that be a vid?" and here is what I have learned: Any song can be vidded. Really and truly - if you are willing to think metaphorically and you know your source and you are willing to do nothing but listen to that song and search for the angle it can be done... there is one catch: you have to love the song - otherwise it is just torture.

Wow, thanks for taking the time to reply so thoroughly. And I can tell that 'Cowboy' and 'Clint Eastwood' were inspirations - both of them flowed so naturally and beautifully that I just felt swept along. But...'Jenny from the block'? Really? I would never have thought that, not in a million years.

Any song can be vidded. Really and truly - if you are willing to think metaphorically and you know your source and you are willing to do nothing but listen to that song and search for the angle it can be done...

And that's the problem with me, really. I'm not very good at the whole - 'thinking metaphorically' thing. I've only tried vidding once and that was to the easiest song possible to vid - 'Always A Woman', by Billy Joel. And I usually have to watch a vid several times over before I even start to get at the message the vidder was trying to get across - and it's not the vidder's fault, I just find the underlying message pretty hard to get, most of the time. So it's no wonder that I find it pretty difficult to see how I would even try and work one into a vid. But it's still fun to imagine potential vids in your head, you know? And who knows? Maybe it gets easier with practice. I'm still eagerly awaiting Dawn's Wesley vid and your Spuffy one.

Um, actually I am not going to vid JLo (well no plans to) but it is a catchy tune.

Dawn sees no metaphors - ever. She is very literal - to the point that sometimes it is amusing.

Is [livejournal.com profile] vyra on WeBoB? What's her name there and does she have vids up?

oh, and as far as the anti-Angel thing in your later entries... I confess I don't care for Angel for the parts that he was on BTVS, but I also confess that I haven't watched his show until the early-middle of this season, so I don't tend to go on anti-Angel rants anymore (or if I do, they're small and good-humored).

But I came by something that might make you feel better when I was patrolling [livejournal.com profile] buffy_ioncs:

It's a whole bunch of very pretty S/A icons. :)

Thank you so much for the icon link.

Dammit - leave it to me to get a person's LJ user name wrong. She is [livejournal.com profile] vrya and she runs Tangled Synthesis at http://www.vrya.net/ts/index.php

I highly recommend all of her videos - she has a very original eye (also - gorgeous collages and VCD covers)

i have vyra on my friends list on LJ alredy (I constatly guhs at her collages, and she just started making bookmarks!). What I meant was wondering if she was registered at BoB, because you mentioned her vid connected to the bootcamp thing. I can't always keep track of what people name are on boards, on LJ, and on their sites all together.

As far as I know, Vrya is not over at BoB - I was just mentioning some vidders that I have long owed feedback to, in addition to the bootcamp vids.
