Sometimes there are weeks when you realize that life really does eat you from the bottom. Or something.

Okay - that interpretation of "From beneath you it devours" still cheers me up. Go season seven of BtVS!! It's your birthday, it's your birthday!

::grooves::

I've been totally offline for the majority of the week and this also coincided with a fairly weighty depressive episode that was relieved first by a care package from [livejournal.com profile] heres_luck (MUSIC!! FOOD!! COOKIES! BONE PEOPLE!!), installation of the internet AT MY HOUSE (I am online at my house! My house is online! I am online at my house!), and reading Neil Gaiman's "Stardust" - which is a book that I can honestly call delightful. I don't know that I have ever called anything delightful ever, and I blame this on an astonishing lack of garden parties to attend (I assume that if I did attend a garden party, I would refer to all sorts of things as delightful and also eat tiny cucumber sandwiches) but in describing this story - delightful is quite an apt term.

Now - here is where I pimp you - my esteemed FLIST for help. I am about 9 minutes short on the Unexpected Levels vid show for Vividcon. I have a couple of vids in mind to replace the ones that were already engaged to other shows - but I am sadly not as well versed as I wish to be in what is out there vid-wise. I need your help.

This show is a combo of Meta-Vids and also Mind-Fuck vids (which are my favorite kinds of vids - so yay!!). So it doesn't have to be meta if it fucks with my mind and it doesn't have to be a mind-fuck if it is really meta - but if it has both, I may want to bear its children. Or possibly raise puppies with it. One or the other.

I do not need vids in the BtVS/Angel fandom. Right now the show is heavy on the heavy and so a humourous or whimisical vid would be nice. But not necessary - Mindfucks sometimes hurt. Also - the vid absolutely does not have to be online. Tell me what you know about it.

So - go - rec vids to me. Blow my mind.

Tzikeh's "Close to You"? I wouldn't say it is entirely meta but it uses meta in some really neat ways. Also - much wimsy.

I hear I'm one of the folks who already grabbed one of your ideas. ;-) Sorry about that -- but It's All Been Done is a perfect tweak to the literal/metaphor universe. So I feel compelled to help you! Jo and Christy's Oz vid for the Love Boat theme was shown last year, and I don't know if you're trying to avoid that, but it's both funny and a total mind-fuck in that it takes the tropes of prison and ironically reverses them. Carol has an older X-Files vid called Phone Sex that's a sort of meta-commentary on the use of cell phones and messages in XF, and sort of cute and light/funny. And Jessica/the Loop gang have a funny vid for XF as well to the Carpenters' Close to You that often relies on meta vid humor (a title card saying "Mulder's eyes are not blue" on the lyric line about blue eyes).

If I can come up with more, I'll let you know. Right now I'm away from all my tapes and discs, of course, so my mind is totally blank.

Oh, and hey -- what about that vid that was such a huge hit two Escapades ago, and I think was also shown last year (sorry, I keep giving you vids shown last year!) called I Kissed a Girl? Totally meta joke for the slash fen.

I have another one of Carol's XF vids in the show - but I totally forgot about the Love Boat vid. I loved it!! Great idea.

I'm assuming that you already have Laura's Farscape vid Come Together for a mind-fuck vid? But just in case, I'm throwing it in the ring.

I also just thought of a meta-humor one on the MC tape 3, I think -- Theme Song. It kind of gives the joke away when you say which show the theme song is from, but think the Four Horsemen riding down the hill, and old westerns on TV. Short, and funny.

Laura's vid, I am assuming that will be in Nearly New - didn't it premiere this year??

I am so freaking thrilled with you for reminding me of the Love Boat Theme. Speaking of Western theme songs - have you seen F-9/11 yet? Michael Moore vids!! To political propaganda effect - but still vids! Why can't we do that?

Oh, I missed you SO MUCH. I really love Stardust, even though most people prefer his other novels.

For things a bit like it (whimsical and delightful and not really at all like epic fantasy), I think his really big influence was Hope Mirrlees' Lud-in-the-Mist (OOP), though there's also some resemblance to Lord Dunsany's novels, notably The King of Elfland's Daughter and The Charwoman's Shadow (which for some weird reason has a schlock horror novel cover, even though it would have been much better off with a Pre-Raphaelite painting, like The King of Elfland's Daughter).

Uhm, okay, gwyn took "it's all been done before", and I'm going to assume you have "I'm not a virgin anymore" and "I kissed a girl". For a fun meta, I suggest "Hair" which is a meta-vid addressing the needs of the hair fan. *g*

Hmmm. What's on the list? "Sweetest Perfection" is brother/sister incest from Wiseguy. Do you have a lionel/lex or HP vid yet? I think both those could be mind-fuck-like for subject matter.

And on the funny side of that, Katherine's "tainted love", a meta-commentary on the krychek-abuses-mulder storyline. Oh! And "stand by your man" Katherine's ironic Buffy vid. Hey, there can never be enough irony...

Oh! "As Girls Go" -- Gwyn and Sandy's vid that takes clips of mulder being girly and parellels it with DD in drag. Very meta commentary on the tendancy to femminize a character.

Uh, "Similar Features"? There's a classic slash story about the protagonist falling for a woman because they look just like the guy that is 'forbidden'. Similar Features plays that out in a vid, using Cassie/Jim/Blair.

"The Man Song" -- Light and funny meta commentary juxaposing girlish behavior with action hero behavior.

What can I say, I like the meta. *g*
From: [identity profile] rabid1st.livejournal.com
...and so I have no earthly idea who Gwyn and Sandy are...but they sound positively delightful. Could you please point me in the direction of this vid:

As I am all about ranting over this particular Meta...and, of course, all about Mulder doing anything.

Sis...I have nothing I would be qualified to rec to you...but I will say...when I am down I like to watch that "I Need A Hero" vid from Farscape...I know you know it...because I would have linked to it from Headtilt.

Professionals "true Colors" by Cyndi Lauper. I have no idea who did it. It's a comment on badfic. Old VCR vid. I'm sure Tzikeh has a copy.

I heard a rumor that Morgandawn was helping to remaster Orinoco Flow/Data's Dream but do not know if that project has been completed. It might be a nice time to re-premiere it.

[livejournal.com profile] sineala made an X-Files vid called "Sorry" that had some odd bits of meta, such as Krycek toeing Melissa Scully's body on the lyric "Sorry I had sex with your sister," when the actress that played her was Nick Lea's girlfriend. It's also funny yay!

See - now that is just *too* meta - especially considering that the vids are gonna play to a multifandom audience and even though I am an TXF fan - I would not have gotten that.

See - I have to pick meta that almost anyone can infer. It has to be Global Meta. Also - I already have 2 XF vids. I'm dithering about repeating a fandom or a vidder. This is a lot of responsibility. I could crack at any moment.

How about Enormous Penis, (http://www.disordered.org/movies/Enormous-large.mov) a Farscape vid featuring D'Argo's qualta blade. Is that more the obvious brand of meta?

My SG vid, "Release", was intended as meta (does it work as such, I don't know) as a comment about the fandom as much as the show. My version of "Something to Talk About" may or may not be mindfuck as to pairing. If I can think of vids by others I'll let you know.

There's an SV vid that uses music from the Star Wars Prequels that's kind of meta-y, I think - the vidder's screenname is Hecubes and his/her e-mail is hecubus928@yahoo.com.

And a Hard Core Logo vid from (I think?) last year's Vividcon called "Monster" read as sort of meta to me, at that time - I think I thought it was a commentary on the fandom reaction to Joe Dick? But it's been a while since I've watched it, so it's quite possible I'm totally on crack, there. *g*

And, oh, there's a Stargate vid called "Desperate But Not Serious," by Carol S., that's about the way Jack can be characterized in fic - the extreme caveman-ness, and all. I don't know if it's totally universal, but a lot of fandoms have the CaveManGuy and FeminizedGuy cliches, so it might fit.

Hmm, I think that's all I can think of.

Hiya!

I made the Monster vid for Joe Dick, and I made the vid because I love Joe Dick the monster, not Joe Dick the victim. It's really just how I see the character. Is that meta? I don't know, I'm not that clever ~:) I'm just happy that the vid made any impression on you at all.

Hi. *g* I had seen it after reading a bunch of fluffy!Joe and misunderstood!Joe stories, so I think that's where my perception came from. I like Joe the complicated, sometimes monstrous Joe a lot better. And, yes, the vid was very very nifty - I was especially happy about the music choice of a band that Joe and Billy would actually approve of, particularly since a lot of HCL vids I've seen use music that's wayyy too Pop for these two.
