Okay so is it true that Jake Whathisname-I-Can-Never-Spell-It-Starts-With-Gyllsomething, aka Donnie Darko, is gonna be the next Superman??
Cause, I gotta say - I'm not hating that idea. Not. At. All. I'd like it even more if they would go with a Kevin Smith script. Or, y'know - some other fanboy or girl's.
I'm also on one great big ole Superman kick. It has been building this year, but the kick is just about at its zenith. Or is that Xenith. One is a word and the other is a brand. Maybe this is not the word I want after all? Maybe I mean something else all together? Cause, the Xen is making me think of xenophobia and that is totally not where I am going here. Although maybe it is. Who is to say really? Superman/Xenophobia - I have read this story. I think.
Maybe I am cresting on the Superman love cause I have to move this month and really - there is never a better time to know Superman, than when you move.
Well - unless you drive your car off a bridge. I'm not planning on ever doing that so I'll settle for help moving my books.

Date: 2004-06-04 10:30 am (UTC)Also - in only a single short hour, I have grown very attatched to the idea of Donnie Darko flying. He is just so precious.
I am also so very deeply disturbed by the thought of Selma Blair playing Lois Lane. This is upsetting as I just don't think she is any good in anything - she has two modes: depressed and angry-depressed. If this pans out then Lois Lane is destined to become a fictional icon that I adore, who has *never* been definitively cast for me. Poor Lois deserves so much more. At least it isn't Jennifer Garner.

Alas, it look as if Jennifer Garner is going to get her own Elektra (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0357277/) movie. And as Elektra Assassin (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0871353091/qid=1086370637/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/002-9276279-2591227?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) is my favorite comic ever, I think I'll actually have to like stage a protest or something. Seriously, the idea makes me want to cry. She's the reason I never saw Daredevil.
And Selma Blair has none of the sassy umph that Lois needs. Hmmm, I'm not sure who does. I need to think about this for a bit.

Hollywood should not me allowed near any comic bookstore.

And we have Jakey G. Flying. In tights.
Yeaaaaaaah.

Date: 2004-06-04 11:45 am (UTC)I can't believe Selma Blair continues to be attached to this project. Maybe she was good in Hellboy or something. But she's made a career out of being WASPish and bland.
Fanboys be damned -- I would much rather see Beyonce as Lois Lane (if they were the only two choices). She's a whole lotta woman.
I'm not sure Rose Byrne looks... American enough. I'm going off of Star Wars though -- I haven't seen Troy.
Henry Cavill, though not a big name, has the right look for Superman, and might be a safe (if uninspired) choice. He's also a fan favorite to play Cedric Diggory, if that role hasn't been cast yet:
But if Beyonce can enter the discussion, why not a black Superman? He'd sure feel like an outsider growing up in rural Kansas.
It almost goes without saying that the ideal Superman movie would carry over the cast of Smallville in a couple of years...
Sorry, I don't remember who made this icon, so don't take it. It's on my hard drive for collection purposes only.

Date: 2004-06-04 12:02 pm (UTC)Okay - so the Henry dude is pretty and that will go a long way with me.
Beyonce as Lois Lane. Dear God, boy - what the hell are you thinking???!!! We can do so much better. Physically - yes - she is beautiful and I would rather see her than Selma (who was horrible in Hellboy) - but that is like saying I'd rather have the boil on my leg than my ass - it is a no-win situation.
Let's think about this constructively: We need a strong actor who exudes intelligence and sexuality. Also - she needs to be really, extremely and possibly, annoyingly pretty. This should not be difficult. Who do we like?
Whoa - I don't think we like anyone. Liv Tyler - yuck. JLo - over her. Winona?? I don't think so. Natalie Portman? too delicate. Lucy Lui? Eh, maybe - but the only time I've ever seen her have chemistry with anyone that was with Uma Thurman and they were fighting to the death.
Maybe Uma?? No. No that would not work at all. At all.
We need Sela Ward 15 years ago. Before "Sisters" ruined her.

Okay - so the Henry dude is pretty and that will go a long way with me.
He's certainly a better choice than mopey Jake Gyllenhaal. I saw The Good Girl and Lovely and Amazing, and I just don't see whatever it is about him.

It's called shock value. Misdirected fanboys who'd prefer Selma Blair because she may have the right look (i.e. pale white brunette) need to re-adjust their priorities. Beyonce is far from an ideal choice, even among possible black Lois Lanes, but I'd rather have that personality.
Lois Lane would be good for Beyonce's career, but probably not good for the movie. Moving on...

Exactly. In a strange way, Superman is easier to cast.
Basically, we need Allison Mack, but older and with darker hair. I don't think she needs to be annoyingly pretty. In fact, she shouldn't even be prettier than Superman. Just a good counterpart. The intelligence (emotional and streetwise) and sexuality are more critical components.
I've never liked a single suggestion for Lois, even in the beginning, when Sandra Bullock was attached back in the Nicolas Cage as Superman period. I'm in the minority for liking Margot Kidder, but I'm biased as those movies were very formative for me.
Liv Tyler - yuck.
Thank you. About the right age, but unattractive and can't act. Shut up, LOTR fans.
JLo - over her.
Also too old for the role. Even when she was in Out of Sight.
Winona?? I don't think so.
Maybe back in the mid 1990s when she needed to change her career direction, but it's too late. Interesting potential chemistry with Johnny Depp, though, should they cast him as Lex.
Natalie Portman? too delicate.
Bad for her career. Fanboys have been lusting after her since she was 14. She doesn't need any more of that. Also, a little bland.
Lucy Lui? Eh, maybe
I'm not convinced. Ask

Whoa. I can't trace that far back.
I wish I had suggestions of my own, but I don't. Rose Byrne (or another relative unknown) sounds pretty good right now.
Lucy Liu
