hi sisabet! i hope you don't mind me leaving a comment here -- i looked for an email but couldn't find one. i wanted to ask if it would be okay for me to include "without you i'm nothing" in a talk i'm giving on smallville slash at a conference this week. I absolutely adore this vid...i think it is so powerful, and it also fits in perfectly with my talk. It would help it end with a bang, that's for sure :) I could cite you in whatever way you want, of course.

Hi Sisabet,

hmmmm. the conference isn't actually just a fan
conference, it's kind of a mix. It's the international
conference for the fantastic in the arts, and it has a
subsection on Slash and Fan Fiction. So it's going to
be a mix of fans and academics, I would think -- I
mean, I know some fans who are going, as well as some
academics and fan/academics. I'm a media studies grad student and
an SV fan/slash writer, and I've shown a vid before
(with the vidders permission) at an academic
conference -- it was just a couple of weeks ago,
actually, I showed Forked's "Freak #1", and it was
very well recieved--people loved it. I'd understand of course if you're
not comfortable with it, but I really would love to
show "Without You I'm Nothing" -- it just closes out
my paper so well. I'm looking at how both Smallville
and Smallville slash intertwines discourses of
morality and fate (superhero thematics) with more
personalized, empathetic and romantic depictions of
Clark, Lex, and Lionel.

Sure - academic conferences are fine. I'm flattered that you would want to show my vid and let me know how it goes. I'm hesitant to have my vids at a con where someone connected to the show might attend - and I don't really send vids to show at cons I don't attend (Escapade being the exclusion) - but this is different.

I can actually get the vid to you in a much better quality version - either in mpeg-II for burning as an SVCD or mv2/wav for burning as a dvd - let me know if you will need either (or if you need to know what mpeg-II means ;)

I can definitely guarantee that there will be no one involved in the making of SV at this congerence *g* -- just a mix of fans and esoteric academic types.

How shall I cite you as vidder or should I just leave it anonymous? I'll do whatever you are most comfortable with.

Hmmm... As far as quality goes, well, the quality is actually pretty good on the copy I downloaded from your site, but I guess better quality is better...the real issue is a) sadly I don't have a DVD burner (and, yes, I'm last minuting this, I leave for the conference this afternoon) and b) I'm not even sure they are going to have hook up to a projector so I might even just be showing it on my laptop. Last time I showed a vid (Forked's, that I mentioned) I did just show it on my laptop, and it was fine. I doubt that our audience will be all that large.

Still, you know, it's possible that someone there might have a DVD burner, or perhaps they will have equipment that plays svcd (a regular dvd player won't play that, right?) Hmmm....

Well, I guess at the very least if you do have a higher quality version just to play on my computer, and you think that would be better, then by all means send me that. How could I get it from you?

Sorry to be a) technologically clueless and b) completely last minuting all of these logistics. I had these two conferences on top of each other, and I'm just reeling from it.

Well - some DVD players will play SVCDs and most will play VCDs -- I could run an mpg of the file though and send that - it will play on your laptop or could be burned to CD-R and play on most DVD players. I think.

The file will be about 50-100 mbs though - so I don't know how much free space you will have on your laptop... I can IM the file to you over AIM - my userid is sidthedogfaceboy and if you let me know what time you will be online (I'm on Eastern Standard Time) we could try to do an electronic file transfer. Of course, if you think that the wmv from the site is fine, then by all means use it - I understand how it is trying to get everything together and have time run out. I am very happy that you think my vid will be useful in your presentation.

ooh hmm that sounds like it could be very god (the mpg that could be burned to cdr and play on most dvd players) -- the room isn't a problem i definitely have space on my computer. but the one problem is that i have never been able to get file transfer to work on my im. my im userid is lolitaluthor, and i'm on often, i'm on right now, actually :) and i will be on again late tonight after i get to the hotel, maybe after nine or ten?

is there some way other than file transfer that i could get it from you? any way you could temporarily put it up on your site? or i guess we could have you put it up temporarily on my site.

Thanks! I downloaded it and it looks great! I've yet to try to burn it, but hopefully that won't be a problem. If not I'lll just show it on my laptop -- it looks beautiful in this higher definition copy and my screen is a decent size.

My talk is tomorrow! *is a little nervous* I'll definitely let you know how it goes. So far everyone I've met at this conference is a slasher, though no SV people--but maybe we'll make some SV recruits through my talk and your vid! *g*
