So I rewatched most of Angel Season One this weekend doing research for a vid (vidsearch? I have this very annoying mental habit of changing words around when they involve vidding to actually having "vid" in the word itself. So something can be Vidtastic or Vidlicious and again - it is very obnoxious and trite and actually a mental habit that I try not to share, but sometimes it slips out) and I decided to watch the cast interviews.

I normally don't ever watch anyone on TV ever if I can help it. It skeezes me out - like Alison Hannigan kinda looks like Willow, but isn't Willow... I just don't like it.

But I finally watched the AtS Cast interviews and well...

Alexis Denisof isn't British???? He sounds so, he sounds wrong, all hard "r"s and I think my world may be collapsing. This is why I never watch these things or read these things. Next thing ya know I'll be finding out that Juliet Landau is actually from California and James Marsters grew up in Fresno. Oh, the humanity.

Giles is still English - right?

God. When I first heard Alexis Denisof, I couldn't deal. If he had sounded like Paul Lynde, I couldn't have been more surprised.

I remember I had to call you and have you explain it to me, I was so blown away. :->

Well now that you mention it, they are from California...

But have no fear my dear, Giles is actually English. That's just not his natural accent. His is more like Spike's, only harder to understand.

Ditto, I was way shocked when I heard them. Denisof I actually have a hard time listening to in interviews because his accent is so different. Marsters I don't mind as much, but he sounds more like I do so I guess I don't give it much thought...

Love Head's natural accent though.

Denisof has spent so much time in England he sounds like an American faking a really, really bad British accent... His vowels are British but his R's are American. I say we send him somewhere for American Accent elocution lessons. I know. My house. Then he'd sound like a chick born in the south who grew up in the midwest and watched too much British TV in college.

Wait. Really not an improvement.

I have the same issue.

I don't want my fictional buddies, heroes, and BSOs to become real people who look sort of like them but are, in essence, entirely different. It rocks my world, man, and not in a good way.

I can take gag reels every once in a while, but mostly? I avoid interviews and even appearances in other fictional works, if I'm dead gone on the individual in question.

I just finished watching the season 3 dvds and I had the same reaction.
It's just wrong.

Alexis Denisof isn't British????

*goggles*

Okay, I live in England I honestly thought he was British. I am so horrified and confused right now.

very rarely - and I do mean *rare* - Denisof will slip and give a word an american inflection (in the season three DVDs he does it once with the word "world" that I remember). But he is so spot on that I only catch those slip-ups once in awhile.

I reckoned it was intentional. Like since Wes has lived in America for a while now.

I have to go lie down now.

Nope, he's not British. If you want to hear him acting in his American voice, check out the season 6 Highlander episode Diplomatic Immunity.

I know! It's disturbing, isn't it?! Actually, I get annoyed when I listen to Alexis in interviews and things where he's not!Wesley. Weird reaction, I know, but here's my reasoning: he sounds better with the accent, and he sounds like an Englishman trying to sound like a Murkin when he talks in interviews, anyway, so he might as well just give in and speak like Wes all the time. *pantpant* Yes.

Next thing ya know I'll be finding out that Juliet Landau is actually from California

Weird bit of trivia: she's Martin Landau (kind of a duh, you'd think, what with the same-last-name thing and all, but hey! I didn't know!) and Barbara Bains' daughter :)

and James Marsters grew up in Fresno. Oh, the humanity.

He was born in Greenville, actually. And grew up in Modesto. :D

Giles is still English - right?

Yes, he is! Though, IRL, he giggles like a schoolgirl a lot.

Just trying to be a helpful little monkey :)

ASH's accent is real. Thank God. I love him. Now he will never be ruined. *happy sigh*
I love his giggling, make me want to make him giggle...in the good ways of course

Alexis Denisof broke my heart when I heard him speak with his American accent. I like my men with Sexy Voices not to be fake, damnit!

And what everybody else said about ASH. He sounds *lovely*.

I thought Alexis was born in Britain and raised in America, or has British parents. He's not that far off the island, at least.

Alexis was born in Maryland, raised on both the East Coast and in Seattle. I don't think either of his parents are Brits. From his name, I'd expect that either his father or paternal grandfather is Russian. He moved to England in his late teens and spent at least 15 years there before heading to LA. That explains his anglicized American accent and his extremely convincing Wes voice.

I must say I had pretty similar reactions to you at first, Sisabet. I think I refused to watch a James Marsters interview for over a year because I saw a snippet of something on ET or some other Entertainment news show and freaked out. It's just wrong...they sound so much better with the accents. I mean, Alexis? I can't stand his real voice...*sigh*
