Dec. 28th, 2002 01:30 pmI'm home. I have been for 2 days now, but a system error has kept my computer down for a few days. This did strike terror into my heart (I actually would not leave the tower in Memphis over the holidays -what if someone stole it? That is how much I love my computer). But other than some minor adjustments everything appears to be fine. I will spend today backing up files.
We had an adventure over the holidays. Everything went as planned Monday - I went to work, and Dawn had the transmission serviced and the oil changed on the truck. When I got home around 6pm, it was raining hard and I had a minor nervous breakdown over the presents going in the bed of the truck - Dawn hit on the brilliant idea of putting them in plastic crates. Add to that a shower curtain acting as a temporary tarp(purchased a very nice tarp at the first truck stop we passed) and we were off! At least until we hit Bucksnort, TN (yes, that is its name - exit 152 on I-40). It appeared that the transmission went out on Dawn's truck. We got to the BP station and waited for our Dad to come and get us. At least it was a famous BP station - it gets on the news because when convicts escape, they always want to stop at this BP for its sandwiches and that is how they are usually recaptured. You'd think that they would quit stopping there, but I guess those sandwiches are mighty fine. I did not choose to partake. Dawn asked for a pimento cheese sandwich, but they were out. The old man at the counter offered to make me a cheese sandwich. I told him, "No thank you. I don't eat cheese." I have no idea why I told him that but since he offered I felt I needed a reason to refuse. A reason better than my perfect satisfaction with the Corn Nuts and chocolate frosted Donettes that I planned as my supper.
A few hours later, Daddy finally arrived to pick-up me, a newly nauseated Dawn (she should have stayed away from my Corn Nuts. First solid food in three days and it is that. At least she put the forty of Miller Lite back up when I expressed misgivings) a sleepy boy and cranky dog. Oh - let's not forget all the soggy Christmas presents. We got to my parents house around 3:00am.
The next day (later that morning) was Christmas Eve. Dawn and Dad borrowed a flatbed trailer and went to pick up her truck. Dad knew a fellow in town that does good, cheap work on transmissions, so we had a plan. 'Cept the flatbed blew a tire on the way back home and they ended up wrecking. Well sort of - see it was sleeting - and combined with the heavy rains from the night before - Dad was able to pull off into the median and the mud kept everything from rolling. Actually there was minor physical damage that resulted from this - my expert insurance opinion - and no one was hurt. Dawn's truck did break a chain and ended up half on/half off the trailer. Interestingly enough, the lft running board was cracked. That appears to be it as far as body damage. Once they got the truck off the trailer they found out that it would run okay, so Dawn actually followed Dad and drove it home (to Kentucky). We usually exchange gifts on Christmas Eve night, but I sent the boy to bed around midnight. Cappy and I were staying up watching "Forensic Files" (cause nothing says Christmas like DNA evidence) and Mom had fallen asleep. When Dawn and Dad got home it was 3:30 am. She was determined to get her presents after the night she had had so she went and woke the boy and we exchanged gifts. Hey - guess what?! I got the season 1 Highlander DVDs!! Go me!!
Christmas was nice - spent it at my grandmother's house and it was very pleasant and lots of good food. Also - Me, Dawn, and Cappy all got silver bracelets with our screen names on them! They are beautiful and it is nice to know that even though most of our relatives don't get the whole internet/fandom thing, they accept that this is what we like to do.
Day after Christmas we took Dawn's truck to the guy and he worked on it and drove it. Then I drove it. Then Dad drove it. We all agreed that it was running fine. The transmission man thought that when Dawn had it serviced that maybe they flushed something that should not have been flushed and when Dad wrecked, it knocked it back into place. Seemed logical. Dad and I then went to look at cars that are much too nice for the likes of me (test driving in a small town is fun!) and Dawn and I loaded up the truck again to head home (I had to work Friday)this time sans boy (staying with his father during winter break). We made it 30 miles before Dawn started dry-heaving out the window (this virus she caught is a relapse bitch) and another 20 before the truck started acting up. Long story short (or in this case shorter, since the story is already incredibly long) Mom temporarily traded her car for the truck so I could get to Memphis in time to work - I love her car and may not give it back - and they are having the truck looked at again. This time we think the problem may lie with the fuel system. I'm just happy because we made it back to Memphis by 2am that night -- we are getting much earlier with our arrival times, which means we are becoming more efficient with this whole breaking down in the middle of nowhere deal - which is a wonderful skill to develop.
Now I am going to work on restoring my system and backing up files and I have not vidded a single thing for 6 days, so I'm itching to do something. I was mad at Dawn for messing with the timeline of Mission Temple Fireworks Stand without telling me or asking if it is okay. I mean - I don't go on the site and start changing things willy-nilly without her permission (at least - not on purpose). I planned on just letting her finish it and refusing to work on it at all from this point out, but now I am filled with spirit of holiday cheer and also I really feel sorry for her. I know I don't have a car right now - but she has only made like 3 payments on the truck. Man, it sucks to be her. At least she has three new Fleetwood Mac DVDs to help her through these troubled times.
