I am a happy girl for I have received my surprise from
tzikeh and I now proclaim her Lord of the Pimps. Verily and there will be many fandoms and one Pimp to fangirl them all and that one shall be called tzikeh and it shall be good.

This is what happens when you get your Tolkien mixed up with your Bible. Oh! Two great tastes that taste great together! Someone should write LotR/Bible crossover fic. Anyhoo, I anticipate many funfilled nights watching my birthday present. I plan on compiling a list called "What Would CJ Do?" and in it I will keep track of how to live life according to the fictitious White House Press Secretary CJ Cregg as I watch season one of The West Wing.
Today, I was running from my car to the office in the pouring rain and my hands were full of stuff and a latte and I was hunched over, trying to shield the latte when I got to the door and realized one of the many things I was lugging from the car to the office was an umbrella. A folded up, actually dry cause I didn't use it, umbrella. Would CJ do something like that? I know she will kiss Elliot from "thirtysomething" and pick up her goldfish bowl and then walk into a door and I would *so* do that, except for the kissing Elliot thing cause I don't find him attractive. Actually, I find none of the male cast members of "thirtysomething" attractive in the least, but give me 3 glasses of red wine and I'd probably make out with Gary. I'm not proud of that, just realistic.
I now have basic cable access in my apartment, but no internet access. I am just relieved at this point that I get to watch Angel tonight. I haven't missed an original air date in years - gotta keep my streak going otherwise I might get a life or something and we can't have that.
Since I have complete control over the remote, I spent this morning (before work) watching MTV and I have formed some opinions:
1. Kayne West: I love him. I watched his video "Through the Wire" and loved not only the song, but also the style of the video - it is the story of his injury/recovery from a car accident last year - his jaw was broken and mouth was wired shut when he recorded this freaking song! In the video we scan a bulletin board filled with photos and notes and as we move across the board the polaroids come to life and show scenes from his recovery. It is an innovative and sincere video in a very insincere genre (rap). Humilty is not something found freely in hip-hop and he self-deprecates in a quiet, unassuming way that is wonderful and very different from the self-hate of Eminem (another honest rapper). This guy is refreshing. Also - he gives much love to Chaka Khan at the end and I love a man that can sample and then show appreciation.
2. Whoever this Cassidy guy is - he recorded an unironic ultra-serious song about getting girls to come to his hotel for a one night stand. His video with R. Kelly would have been over the top and hilarious as a parody on SNL. As it is - I just cannot believe it is real.
3. That screechy voiced Evanescence chick can shut the hell up now. I get it. You have suffered massive pain in life and have Big Important Yearnings. NOW BE QUIET or no cookie.
4. Dude. I like Britney Spears. I don't mean as in "OMIGOD, she is such a talent I must buy all of her records and listen to them now!" I mean that I just like her. I am entertained by her and her "Toxic" video is extremely visually striking. Dawn came over when I was home for lunch and we watched it and she wondered how much that vid cost. I think the use of movement in this vid is so freaking stunning that I want to sit and study it. Also - Britney is really pretty in that plastic kinda way.
5. Jessica Simpson. Something about a T-Shirt that she wears that makes her happy. I think that you have to watch her TV show to get this vid - I don't watch either. Huh - I had to mute the TV cause the over-processedness of her vocals and the music were getting to me. It was like too much Velveeta, which may explain why I can tolerate Britney's vocals: They are like a casserole with just the right amount of velveeta - it isn't fine dining, but sometimes it just hits the spot. Jessica is smothered in velveeta and none of the other casserole flavors are coming thru at all. She needs to step back and let the Ritz cracker topping on her songs shine.
6. I think Maroon 5 should probably only ever sing "Harder to Breathe" since it doesn't look like they will ever write/perform a song as compelling as that one again. Personally, I think it was a lucky accident that they wrote that song in the first place and the lead singer...I don't like him. This is completely unfair of me, I realize that, but something about the way he moves and sings and faces the camera make me think he is an incredible jackass and not is a good way. I love being irrational.
7. Usher. Yep. He is a thug now. Oh dear. I am sorry, but I've never appeared on "The Bold and the Beautiful." This automatically makes me more street than Usher. I still think he is precious though and he has a wonderful, woefully used voice. It is a crime what he does with that lovely voice.
8. There is some girl in a group called Joss somethingorother that thinks she is Susan Tedeschi and she is doing a cover of the White Stripes song "Fell In Love with a Girl" - except she is singing "Fell In Love with a Boy." Well isn't that clever? Except for the part where it isn't and isn't this song only a couple of years old? Why does it need to be remade? And if it doesn't need to be remade, than why should I listen to blondie here kareoke it during my free-time? Oh - right - I didn't have too. I can change the channel. Right, right, right, forgot all about that. My final opinion on this cover? She's be kicked off American Idol in her first week - but props for using the White Stripes to get there. At least she has taste.
9. I might like N.E.R.D. - If I am not meant to take them seriously, than I adore them already. If I am - well then I am afraid, but in that truly terrifying "Event Horizon" way.
10. I feel the need to extend this list to #10, but I have run out of things to say. Most of the stuff on MTV sounds the same, but ya'll knew that - right?

Date: 2004-03-03 02:54 pm (UTC)Actually, that's her name. But it's not pronouced Joss like Joss Whedon, I believe it's pronunced Ja which makes no sence to me but she's British and they're silly like that.

Date: 2004-03-03 05:21 pm (UTC)She's been hyped up around here as the second coming, and her voice just annoys the hell out of me. I thought perhaps I was harsh to judge her on one song, but then yesterday, she managed to annoy me yet again while I was caught in that half awake half asleep thing and thus paralyzed with annoyance. She should be banned from airwaves from 6:22 a.m. to 6:55 a.m EST. (or, more specifically at 6:22, 6:31-6:32, 6:40-6:43, and 6:49-6:55.)

Date: 2004-03-03 09:10 pm (UTC)gotta admit I haven't heard this, but my total adoration for the White Stripes' cover of Dolly Parton's Jolene, with Jack wailing "Jolene, don't take my man away from me" would seem to render such a gender-swapping cover totally pointless.

Date: 2004-03-04 10:33 pm (UTC)Had to comment on your take on the MtV videos though. I find myself watching them on occasion. Interesting view on Kayne West and that genre of music in general. Something I've been thinking about myself. Somtimes it is nice to hear someone with a fresh point of view, and you just know they're being honest with you.
Heard a lot of people say things like that about Britney Spears song "Toxic". There's just something about it that draws more people in that with her previous songs...
Oh, and just gotta love your ritz cracker metaphor. Lovely. *snerk* That's all I'm gonna be able to think about every time I see Jessica Simpson now...
