Hellllooooo LJ-Land....
May. 21st, 2003 10:32 pmHere is the deal. I wanted to post all about the finale and my feelings and all good stuff, but then I started vidding and now... well I will go to bed soon... Sigh. I was supposed to take a break for a while as well. I love this part though, well all except for the clipping. I don't want to clip for this vid - I just want them all ready and magically appearing so nothing slows me down.
Oh - finale thought: That Spike? Turned out to be a really decent fella.
I've been totally AWOL from LJ for a few weeks. One reason was I was super-vigilant about finale spoilers and another was just general disheartedness over Grey (Gray - whatever, get over the spelling) Day. I supported it, I think it went well, I have had numerous responses from vidders and would be vidders who learned something so I consider the whole dealio a rousing success. The backlash wasn't fun and being called pretentious by people whose opinion I respect hurt. I don't see the pretentiousness in what we did, but my Daddy did tell me once I was putting on airs at the tobacco auction so it could be a valid charge.
I feel passionately about the issue of fanvideos to an extent that I can't even explain. It has opened me up creatively in avenues I always had in me but never could access before. I'm good at this and I like it. This is almost a first for me (not the being good at something - the enjoying it part) and I treasure it. An attack on what we as vidders do with our creative medium feels almost like an attack on me personally and I can respond very viscerally. I am learning to ignore, however. There will be some people that will not wrap their minds around the concept of respect for fan-art and will never want to cease the arguments and challenges and endless freaking thinly veiled discussions that are just another cry for "Look at me!! I exist!!!" And truthfully, if you can't respect me or my craft, well than that is your right. My right is than to ignore you and enjoy myself.
Honestly - this is a dead horse. Steal from my vids and I will be pissed. Period. I will ask you to stop. Period. If you don't I will call you out in public! Exclamation point. I won't pursue legal means cause there aren't any and dude I am sooo not litigious anyway. I will refer to the accepted norms of my community. If you want acceptance in that community you respect others and conform to the rules. Conform is not always a bad word - plus the slogan "I'm a Rebel! I steal clips!" - very lame. Lamest of the lame in fact.

Date: 2003-05-21 09:18 pm (UTC)I got lucky - the group of people that visit my site and read about Gray Day through that were extremely supportive - I got quite a few people contacting me saying they never realized it was a problem, but now they'd be looking for plagiarism and would call people on it if they saw it. Which...y'know, made me happy.

Oh. That is *so* my vidding gripe, right there. Why oh why can't the computer just know what we want and materialize it for us? Hmm?

Date: 2003-05-22 12:08 pm (UTC)Like you, I got some e-mails from people saying that they'd never thought about these issues before and now they would. That's all I wanted -- a teachable moment. I'm really glad we were able to make something of that, however small.
still bitter
Date: 2003-05-22 06:20 pm (UTC)You steal clips too, and I don't see why you fail to really admit this. It is almost as if you think that the fact you have a disclaimer on your website and that Fox hasn't pursued you legally makes you think they tacitly have approved of what you do. If you would shoot your own material you'd have a lot more respect. And you'd also have the moral high ground on the issue of people stealing footage. Why are you so averse to creating your own footage? Your editing skills are great. I think you'd do quite well. Have you considered it?

Date: 2003-05-22 09:06 pm (UTC)That is so weird, because I'm trying to vid Garbage's Queer right now.
And in response to the person above: huh? Is she suppose to break into the Mutant Enemy building and video tape the episodes while they film them?
