I am definitely adding this to memories to read again and again (that repetition thing? I get that).
I recognize much of myself in what you're saying. I started out All About Buffy and then I saw other people making vids in other fandoms and I think my first non-familiar fandom vid was "Haunted" and I was like - woah. I get what happened and it made me cry and I don't even know these people! And it's just exploded from there as I've gone from downloading vids based on fandoms I know, to vids based on songs I like, to just vids. If it's a vid, that immediately means that I'm interested in seeing it.
And I wonder if there are people who consider fanfiction as their fandom, or if the nature of fanfic (which often draws specifically on reader knowledge for characterization or plot) that requires that you have to have more of a connection with the fandom to appreciate the fanfic? I don't read much fanfic so I'm not sure, but I'd be interested to find out.
