"Without You I'm Nothing" Vid

I should tell you that I think "Without You I'm Nothing" is one of the most powerful vids I've seen. I mean, I don't even watch "Smallville" (I've seen, like, one episode), and I still thought the vid was the coolest things ever. You fit the actions on-screen perfectly with the music, and tell a powerful, complete story at the same time. There are some examples of comic books or movies that are so well done that they show you what can really be done with the medium, and what makes it special. This vid did that for me.

Doesn't it just *irritate* you that you have made more QaF vids than SV vids. ::snickers::

You know though, Without You I'm Nothing, *might* be the best vid you ever made. At least in my opinion, So no worries.

I think you are missing some vids on that list. I'm sure you did that on purpose... but you know you can't revid "Blue Room in Archway" no matter *how* FutureClexy the song is.

I also have a vid of yours you did with Cappy. Hehe... I hoard *everything* people shouldn't let me get my hands on stuff. Blackmail. Actually that's a dirty word, it's not blackmail. It's a strategic move. Yes... that sounds better. Or more like something Lex would do... which I'm not sure is a good thing or a bad thing. Hmmm...

Btw... I just downloaded Essence. ::snickers:: That was different. ;)

Um - BRiA - oops. Fixed it. That was an honest mistake.

I think the fact that I have vidded more in QaF than SV is just a general rule of thumb - I was vidding *more* back then than I am now. I have really slowed down and part of that is because when you first start there is this mad rush to do this and then do that and now I can just relax and take my time and I don't worry about someone getting to a song before me anymore, as there are so many projects I want to do and I'll never get to the all.

Do you have the Britney/Buffybot vid? Cause that one cracks me up.

And don't mock Essence. I begged so many people to vid that one for me and none of them would so I had to do it. That vid is my SPUFFY MANIFESTO!

SUPREME POWER ICON!!!

::loves::

I know you are talking but I am watching your icon and yes? Oh - right - Battleflag. Heh - "it isn't even a vid" - I have been saying that for over a year now and still there is something that I am doing in it that is grabbing people and if I could figure out what that thing is (cause the vid has sooo many technical faults that the thing that is working has to be a fluke) I would be so much more of an effective story-teller.

Yes I have the Britney/Buffbot. I watch that when I need a good laugh. LOL.

And I hear ya about the mad rush. I think everyone goes through that and then it doesn't become about the deadline, it becomes about the vid and it can happen at a slower pace.

Btw... I'm taking your advice and I'm not worrying so much about finishing a vid, as I am the progress. Which means I'm getting somewhere... finally. I have a first draft of a vid! Wheee!!

Random question. Since that's what we're here for and to stroke your ego talk about your vids.

*Where* did you get the idea for WYIN? I remember hearing you mention that you kind of got the idea from seeing the previews for the Butterfly Effect... but an idea like that doesn't just fall in your lap.

Or did it? Were you sitting around one day and you're listening to your CD player and WYIN comes on and suddenly like out of a movie, you think "My God! This is all about Lex." And your coffee cup crashes to the floor... then there is the slow motion running as you make your way to your computer because you just *have* to get to premiere and to the internet and the vid just has to happen because you see it and it's brilliant and... and now I'm rambling.

What was I talking about? I don't remember.

I love my icon very much too! I can't believe that there are only, what, 14 issues of Supreme Power? I want more, now. I've never been a WiP fan -- I am not at all about antici -- pation. But I will wait, because I am in love with the series.

Just rewatched Battleflag to see if I could put into words what works for me: it starts with such a literal bang; they're both clearly having fun, not just the kissing but the smiles; this isn't angst (though it may or may not be love). Then the pace slows from sex to affection, with more smiles, by 1 minute -- showing that physical attraction was the start of the relationship but something more grew. Then the bloody scarf is the first sight of the scarf, but too quickly to really figure it out -- the flashes back and forward begin to build, so we know why he's hanging on to that scarf -- at the same time, they are dancing just like they were dancing at the beginning of the vid, only different because (a) now it's much more romantic, with tuxes and everything and (b) it's clear that something bad is going to happen just as the relationship has moved to the next level. So the dancing is not just part of the back and forth of the current flashbacks, but it also evokes the beginning of the vid separately.

Looking back, that's probably not coherent, but it's the best I can do.

Well - I was in the car and the Placebo CD case went flying cause I slammed on the brakes because I was gonna run a red light cause I all of a sudden stopped seeing the road and started seeing Lex.

But - I never knew the vid was gonna look the way it ended up looking - it just did that. I did not set out to make The Butterfly Effect -- but I was obsessed with the trailer before I made the vid and *after* I made the vid I could totally see how subconsciously I had made Clark into Amy Smart. But that was not actually intentional. I am just not that creative so everything I ever do is built on something else that someone else did.

Also, Lex nearly causes car accidents. Poor Lex.

And thank you for all of your hard work in the name of Vid Art. The thing I love about you (and now I have seen me some vid, too, so I can compare you with others) is that your vision shines through your work. The exquisitely smooth cuts and the perfect (though often quirky) lyric choices certainly don't hurt...but the vision is the thing that makes it art. And art transcends.

We might not agree on ships or character direction or whatever...but none of that stops me from devouring your vids. I dance about like a California Raisin whenever there's a new one.

I'm sure I mentioned when I originally gave you feedback that I had been using Closer as a jumping off point for my Spike/Buffy fic for more than a year when I first saw your video. I knew where every scene you used came from and I could see Buffy there clearly...and yet...the video transcended my bias. Because of your talent...your vision breaks through the wall of preconception (we know the song, we know the clip) that all vids must struggle to overcome.

So, now...I am delighted to find you have a Farscape Vid...because that is my ultimate show. Needless to say...sublime. I love the Ezekiel and the wheel parallel to the wormhole and I marvel at the Rock in RPS syncing up like that. Even though I understand you probably have a dvd ripper and tricked out Adobe and all I have is a few pathetic source clips and Moviemaker...still...I believe it is very hard to get those beat/cuts at the end. They were...astounding.

And finally...let me say...I love the vision you present of Angel the Character and the Series respectively in Cowboy and in Two Words. Again not my vision, but a new way of looking at a world I know intimately. And isn't that what art is supposed to bring us, a new way of seeing what we think we know? Beyond that, knowing what I know now about AtS, I believe the PTB would approve of your kick-ass, take no prisoners, we are going down with this MotherFreller vid style (assuming they were allowed to know your vids exist in any tangible way, I mean ;-D).

So you want feedback?

Two words!

Awesome Art!

Y'all know the lyrics. Don't make me quote it here. And the first person to say this vid is not slash gets me going apeshit on their ass, k?

Heh. I was showing Campaign Ben some of your vids since at the time he was doing a lot of video editing for commercials. First reaction? "Dude, that was really gay." He thought he was really well done though. Have you ever thought of doing video editing professionally?

In any case, my feeling is that the best vids construct their own reality from the source material and tell their own stories. That's what makes Closer and Whatever so good. Vids that rehash stories from the show or showcase characters or relationships from the show are boring. Vids that invent characters(mimbo Angel from Cowboy, Whatever) or relationships(Closer)... now that's interesting.

Thank you so much Rabid!

I knew where every scene you used came from and I could see Buffy there clearly...and yet...the video transcended my bias.

This is really good to know -- and one of the most difficult things to do, decontextualizing a clip. If it works - it just works, but if it fails then there is no recovery. I am always glad to hear that it is working for someone.

I'm thrilled to hear you enjoyed the Farscape vid. I really did not go effects heavy on that one because the show is so effect heavy I had to scale way down. All of the source is from the DVDs and it took me a long time to get that - but they were ripped using a freeware program (do you have a DVD drive on your PC). The version of Premiere I use is *still* 6.0 -- I keep saying I will upgrade (almost all the other premiere users are using 6.5 or Pro) and yet...I don't.

The beat/cuts at the end were possibly the easiest part of the vid just because that is the moment where the song overwhelms me and I just kind of throw the clips on the timeline. It was incredible fun actually - because at that moment you can let go of any narrative cohesion and just focus on what I was calling The Prayer and that is solely emotion based. I love that kind of stuff.

Yeah, I can totally understand that...it happens all the time when I am writing. People will compliment me on fight scenes, for example, and I will be amazed because I am so in the moment for those scenes (with appropriate music playing, etc) that they are based only on the flow of bodies and emotion and the words just pour onto the page. The technically difficult parts of a fic are frequently the ones that nobody notices...the transitions and connecting bits of narrative. ;-D

Oh, and I did forget to mention...I adore Whatever and Without Me. I never listen to rap but I saw Eninem on some awards program and totally loved that song (so perfect for Lilah). Also I see completely where you were coming from in the Two Words LJ post when you suggested your audience just go with the music even though we don't understand all the words...because the visceral appeal of the beat is the thing and the whole 'hands up' moment opening into it like a flower.

Oh, and yes, I do have a dvd player on my PC but I haven't had good luck with freeware (possibly because I have dial up for my downloads and a husband who likes to pick up the phone if I'm not sitting at the computer ;-D). Also...I'm probably one of nature's writers rather than one of her vidders.

Came here from [livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup's journal and I am so glad I did.

Your Cowboy Angel vid is one of my all time favorite vids.

Quick story, I recently turned by brother and his wife onto the Jossverse (turn 2, the rest are food.) He and his wife and my husband's sister come over weekly for marathon BtVS and AtS watching. We are in season 4 on AtS and 7 on BtVS. Anyway, we can not start our marathon without watching your Cowboy vid. We all love it that much. So thank you for joining in our weekly ritual. It just wouldn't be the same without you. :-)

Now going to download some of your other vids. Happy New Year!

Oh - thank you.

I originally took TZ down because I kept seeing snippets of it in other people's "vids" - as in they'd take a 10 second bit of TZ here and there and combine it with someone else's vid to a new song and then say that they made it.

I never reposted it because it was one of the last vids I made using WMM and technically - it has major problems. It has played Club Vivid the past two years at Vividcon, but that is pretty much its only night out.
