Year In Vids Meme
Dec. 23rd, 2004 09:11 pmI'm watching "Outfoxed" with Cappy and getting so upset that I need to take my mind off of this. I can't type well enough to handle AIM so I tried to convert the endoftheyear fic meme to a vid meme and I don't think it really translates. But navel-gazing is an effective strategy for dealing with overwhelming liberal rage (there is solid proof!) so I did not let something like common sense stop me.
This might work better retooled as a commentary on vids *seen* this year as I just do not think I have the objectivity about my own stuff to fill this out effectively. I am gonna think about this and watch MST3K The Brain that Wouldn't Die now.
Videos I made this year:
Whatever (with Luminosity)
Without You I'm Nothing
Paradise
Would?
SOS
Caravan
Two Words
Angry Boy (unposted)
All Your Might (in progress)
Old Newstand at Hamilton Square (in progress)
Weeping Willow (currently in beta)
Disco et fais do do (in progress)
Did I forget a vid?
My favorite video this year (of my own):
I have to pick?? Weeping Willow, just because the love right now is so new.
My best video this year:
Best in what sense? The most well received vid was hands down "Whatever" - followed by WYIN.
I take very little credit for Whatever - the magic was Lum. "Two Words" is probably my best work to date and the fastest I have ever made a vid in my life. It just flowed out of me and it took advantage of every single thing I have ever learned about vidding. WYIN was the same way - but Two Words built on what I learned from WYIN and Paradise - so it has to be better. Hey - in a way Weeping Willow could be my best vid except for the not having the ending figured out and all.
Video most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
SOS - I don't know if unappreciated is the right word - more like it was posted at a very inopportune time. Also, I'm not in the Farscape fandom, the subject matter was not that original as far as addressing the two Johns - although I felt the prayer for the future part excused that unoriginality enough to justify making it.
I don't know that many people at the con knew it was made by me either (VVC challenge vid - vidders are anonymous) and the reveal feels awkward after the challenge show. The vidders can claim their vids if they want to - but how to do this?? It just felt unsatisfying in that often when a vid premieres at a con and you are there - people will come up to you with comments later. This didn't happen. It felt weird and probably set the stage as one of my most personally questioned vid. I have no idea if what I intended came across at all. I think probably that it did not. I don't think this makes it unappreciated as much as just a failure of mine. The vid works for me totally - it is a failure in communicating to others my intent.
In the most literal sense "Angry Boy" is the most unappreciated as I will never post it as the problems in that vid are not fixable. That vid is totally unappreciated, and I don't know if I even learned anything from it other than it is really easy to just quit and it is a relief to admit you cannot fix something.
Most fun video:
Whatever. No question. My year was Whatever, Death, Death, Death, Lex Goes Evil, and Death. Right now Disco Et Fais Do Do is my safe haven. Sigh. No death in sight. Just dead guys.
Video with single sexiest moment:
For me now - it is the headbutt in Weeping Willow. Of the posted vids - either the Angel introductory cuts in Would? or the moment where Lex is on the ground and he figures out *everything* and he looks up with such a sense of wonder and to me that is the moment where it all comes together for him and makes sense and it is such a gift and it takes my breath away. And then he loses it all. So sad. But sexy. My idea of sexy might not mesh with everyone elses...
Hardest video to make:
Caravan was hard - mainly because I don't think I really meshed it as much as I could have - but I don't know how else to have done it. I think Miss M likes it so that is all that matters. Would? took months as did SOS but Paradise killed me emotionally.
Most unintentionally *telling* video:
Paradise was intentionally personal so that does not qualify. Two Words. Every thing I think about AtS, every opinion I have and everything that guts me emotionally is in that vid.

Date: 2004-12-24 04:52 am (UTC)It's like that. I'm usually much better at reading vids than I am at this one; I'm dying to talk to you about it at length and see what it means to you, to try and pull myself through its mystery a little at a time until the flame consumes me. (:
I also want to tell you again how much I love Caravan, and I say this as someone who's not a particular Spike-enthusiast. It's the perfect music, and you use it brilliantly. I love the different emphases in your chronology, how it's such a tight first-person POV (oddly, the lack of lyrics makes it more so, for me -- easier to focus in on Spike's mind without all those silly words, somehow).
I thought about doing this meme myself, but then I remembered that I'd only done two and a half vids this year, so that seems rather silly.

If you do not finish these, I will cry. And possibly wring my hands. And definitely gnash my teeth. And no one wants that.
This is such a cool meme. It is like picking people's brains and I *love* that. So this meme makes me happy.
I don't know if I even learned anything from it other than it is really easy to just quit and it is a relief to admit you cannot fix something.
I still haven't learned that - well, occasionally I will realize a video is so dull it's putting *me* to sleep, and I'll stop, but I can't let it go. Instead it sits on my computer and festers. Ask me about my aborted AtS and QAF vids that are absolutely terrible and mind-numbing but I can't seem to delete for going on a year and a half now. *is a packrat*
*loves this meme*

Date: 2004-12-24 05:39 am (UTC)I still feel the same about WYIN that I did when I told you how I felt about it back in February, btw. But Two Words totally breaks my heart in the good way.
So sleepy. Must sleep now. {{{{{Christmas hugs}}}}}

Date: 2004-12-24 05:59 am (UTC)Paradise is one of the vids I'm immensely thankful for. Have I told you how much your AtS vids contributed to my understanding and appreciation of the show? Hell, they converted me.
Happy holidays, sisabet.

Oh, god. Beta *limbo*, you mean. Okay, my New Year's resolution is to get Weeping Willow out of beta limbo. My New Year's resolution starts sometime next week after I get back from Christmas.
Also? It might help me if, when you get back home, you e-mail me every beta and/or feedbacky thing I've ever sent you that you still have — either in e-mail format or saved AIM chat — from before mid- to late August of this year. I mean, don't stress about it and no rush, but I do want to get from you anything you have at some point.
Also? Two Words? Holy crap. When I watch it I get this feeling building towards the end that's like my heart growing three sizes and my chest expanding to accommodate it so it can hold, all at once, intense, overwhelming love for the entirety of Angel: the Series.

Date: 2004-12-24 08:33 am (UTC)I gotta say - it gave me a whole new perspective on a genre of music that I'd never really listened to. I think you should know that I listened to/watched it over and over again right after the election, becuase it spoke to how I felt about the whole thing. That's how much it socks me in the gut.

Date: 2004-12-24 04:12 pm (UTC)You saw my embarrassingly intense reaction watching Two Words and Caravan for the first time. With each Angel vid you make, it's amazing how much I get it, your love for Angel shining through, even before I saw any episodes. And with every few new eps I watch, I rewatch Two Words and appreciate it just a little bit more. Hell, I squeal during Angel eps because I recognize Two Words scenes.
Oh my god, I LOVE the introductory cuts in Would? So mesmerizing. ::mad applause::
WYIN is mind-blowing brilliance, but you already know that.
