So yeah, if you've already watched my previously posted recs (the vids made for me! MINE MINE MINE!!!) and are, like me, a bit overwhelmed and do not know what to do when staring at the Festivids Master List, do not panic.
I have prepared a starting point for you. This is by no means exhaustive -- or even scientific. I still haven't watched all the vids! There are some vids that are still digesting as well --- big thoughts take time, my friends.
The following are just vids that I really really wish I had made. Unless I did. See what I did there?
The Big Lebowski - "State of Confusion" :
Yeah, the comment "The vid abides" has already been done. But you, know - it still fits. This vid prompted Lum and me to go into a solid hour of quotes and then I figured out that I am the Donny. It was a sad moment of reflection, my friends. This vid, however, is not and captures a sincere essence of the film that I didn't have the imagination to realize was possible, until I was streaming it on my laptop.
Blade Runner "November Rain": If Festivids was a con, this might be the vid of the con. As it is... I am blown away by the absolute *genius* of it -- I mean, I had to have people explain Blade Runner to me. No one had to explain this vid. OF COURSE! It is meta and respectful and yet mocking EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD EVER! It walks a tightrope and never ever never takes itself seriously except it is totally serious omg you guys!
CHiPs "Life is a Highway": Adorable and gave me flashbacks and how can we make Erik Estrada the Patron Saint of Festivids, 2011? I really think if he knew about it, he'd show up.
Constantine "In a Moment": Keanu, you are in a lot of vids, but you were no match for Patrick Swayze. This vid, however, does not belong to you. This is a really compelling and stirring mood piece that doubles as a character study and I am blown away by some of the passages. I really really wish that people thought I made this vid. I am jealous and stalking it and OMG if this vid was Idris Elba, I'd totally be Ali Larter.
Dirty Dancing "You are the Everything": There were a lot of Dirty Dancing vids and they were all adorable and good and captured different things about the movie. This vid, however, captured the thing that made this movie the definitive movie of my tween years: the sense of possibility that is Baby. She is a FORCE, you guys, and she is GOOD and she is growing up and actually making a difference in the lives of the people she touches and this vid shows that in Johnny and Penny and how they are touched and changed by her presence. How she takes an active role in her own life and moves out of the backseat of the car that is her life and takes the chance that she will disappoint her father (who's opinion means everything to her) but follows her own growing sense of self and just how much that means. And because growing up is just that and it is hard, it is really nice to see it happen in a movie that also features a touching first love story and really great dance sequences. But it wasn't even about that. It was about Baby losing her innocence but retaining her goodness and being true to who she was and the daughter her father raised. I cry watching this and I agree with the song: she is the everything.
Event Horizon "Big Pimpin'/Papercut": I made this vid. The world is welcome.
Homicide: Life on the Streets "Runaway": I only watched a tiny bit of H:LotS, but canon knowledge was not necessary for this vid. The story of a man who has to bend but won't break and toll on everyone. It is lovely and touching and really full of affection.
Huge - "In the Sun": This vid does some tech things I personally do not like. Usually, I'm pulled and can't watch when I get that feeling --- it is a testament to the narrative and character study that the committed to that when the thing (credits in the vid) happened, I was so invested and so wrapped up in the story she was telling, I didn't even notice it on my first viewing. This vid deserves to be watched and loved and I adore this young woman and feel like she would be just really amazing to know.
Jurassic Park Trilogy "They Want More": True Story:
cappylicious : I know the Jurassic Park vid was made for someone else. I just also think it was exactly made for me.
Me: You didn't do a dear festividder letter.
Cappy: I know. That is what makes it so amazing.
She might have then gone on about soul mates, I don't know. Part of me thinks the vid is a bit too long, but the other part of me thinks that the length is absolutely necessary for the build, every moment was needed and sometimes I am just so jealous of other people's vids I LOOK for something critical to say. And yes, this would be one of those times. I do love this.
La Belle et La Bete "Arrivee": Um, wow. I will never watch the Disney "Beauty and the Beast" again without being creeped out. Cappy had to stop watching this vid because she was so freaked out she was worried she would not be able to sleep. I am very very impressed.
Lilo & Stitch "Beat Control": So, my little 3 year old cousin-niece came running up to me a few weeks ago waving this movie and asking me to watch it with her, it was now her very favorite. And inside me I heard a little voice go "Finally!" because, yes I have been waiting for this moment. This vid captures the fun of the movie but also respects its heart and continually brings you back to building and loving the family you have. I get choked up everytime and predictably in the exact same place and I am pretty sure that is a universal reaction to this vid.
Lost In Austen "Samsa Morning": If Colin Firth's Darcy has destroyed any chance of you having a fulfilling, romantic relationship - then this is the vid for you my friend. I possibly have identified too much with this vid? But, FINALLY, we (well not we, Amanda, but I feel she is me and I am her and we are we) get to express exactly how much we not only love this story, but the frustration of loving the story and how if you could self-insert, it doesn't mean you should and just... you know just because Darcy has a pretty little mouth, it doesn't mean he should use it. GIVE ME A GODDAMN BREAK, FUCKER!!!
Now I need chocolate
The Millenium Trilogy "Get Some": Disturbing and yet... I like this more than I like the series. I like the pop song and the inflection on the lyrics. I like how she is "your prostitute, you gon' get some" except whoa. This vid makes Lisbeth Salander not only the revenging angel, she is also the voice.
Point Break "Knockin' On Heaven's Door": I could write a sonnet for this vid. Whoever did this vid owns my soul. I can't stop watching. I want to make a deeper analysis but it is just too soon. I can't question it. I can only ride this one out.
Pulp Fiction "Untitled": So, first this vid gets you high. Really really really high. And then it takes you on a journey through Pulp Fiction that by the time you hit the chorus and see HUNNY BUNNY you are possibly wondering what was in that brownie you just ate? Relax. This is just Pulp Fiction. And you are on a crash course. I can't tell you it will be all right because it definitely won't. This vid respects and plays upon the narrative that the movie originally set up (complete with title cards!). If the movie feels like the hero doesn't need to be introduced until halfway, through, then okay. That is what is gonna happen. Mister Mojo Rising, indeed.
Also, nice to see our Patron Saint of 2009. Hi, Bruce. Nice hair. This vid also should be warned for everything ever that is possible to be warned for. I am a terrible and bad and awful person because those things are things I love.
Punky Brewster "Father & Daughter": Have you ever considered being a foster parent? You probably should think about it. Why are you sobbing? Are you okay? Parents are important.
RPF- Lady Gaga "Dance In the Dark": This might be the first time I can ever say this: You had me before Beyonce.
*marvels*
Zombieland "Columbus and Tallahassee": A serious and valid study of the art of raising hell and killing zombies. No, really. This is the entire vid. IT IS AWESOME!
