Attention all Readers: The vid suggestion form for the
vividcon vid shows is now up and running. Please - if you have ideas, vids that might work, suggest them.
Speaking from experience (whoo-hoo! I have experience) the suggestions people put in for your show are very useful. And as a former VJ, I wanted more, more, more.
Suggesting a vid does not mean it will automatically go in the show - that is up to the VJ. Suggesting a vid does mean that you might be alerting the VJ to vids that she might not be aware of OR to vids outside her scope of viewing.
Also, it is fun.
So, tonight I am headed home to my parents' house for the weekend (trust me, Derby Weekend - it is best to not be in Louisville or Lexington unless you are really in a festive mood) and I am packing up DVDs and tonight I am sitting down, maybe with Mom if she is interested and I am watching stuff and making notes and filling out forms. I might also read a tiny bit of some "dueSouth" slash, but y'know - a girl has to have options.
Oh! I also need to get with
sockkpuppett and work on the blurb for our panel. I am so excited about doing this panel that I can't form complete sentences. Right now I am at "YAY!!" and the far more erudite "OMG, YAY!!" Lum is a trooper to do this as well, especially since she totally has her hands full this year especially. But still - YAY!!!! Our panel is near and dear to my heart. OMG YAY!!!!
All of these things are combining to distract me from the very real vidding issue confronting me right now: I have to finish something and soon. Sadly enough - none of my unfinished vids (well maybe the KB one) fit into any of these categories. This is sad because my vidding enthusiasm really shouldn't hinge upon how many vids I have going to a con. This is an extremely whorey way to approach something I profess to regard as art. But, I can't help it! It is the whole BIG SCREEN thing. I want my vids on the BIG SCREEN! Look - BIG! Actually - this is not true. I want my vids on the Big Screen right up and until the title card flashes and then I want to jump up and say "HOLD IT!! I've changed my mind! Can we just hit *skip* cause this vid, she is NOT READY!!!"
Vids Shows Currently Open for Suggestions:
Action: I am kinda debating how I will define action for my own suggestions. I don't think it necessarily means that there are a lot of guns and things blow up. I am positive that action can also include depth -- so right now I am kinda thinking about a lot of different types of vids (narrative, character study, ensemble) that are physical and also? Fast paced. Oh, man - I am gonna have fun with this.
Anime: Hmmm. This is tough for me because I so thoroughly enjoyed the Anime vid show last year - despite all of the issues in getting started, it was a fabulous show. Unfortunately, most of my anime experience is a result of that show. Although... ::looks at Flist:: a lot of y'all have been very busy little cross-genre bees, I see. Rock on.
Character Study - Women: Ohh - so many vids. Actually, I am glad that this show is happening because there are so many really incredible vids about women characters, that it always bugs me when I hear "oh there are no female-centric vids" - erm, not true. Not true by a long-shot. I really hope this show puts an end to that assumption. Actually - if we stick to PURE CHARACTER STUDY vids - I can name more female characters than male right offhand. Wow.
::loves vidders soo much::
Comedy: This is such a difficult show to balance, IMO. Right now, just a a person thinking of suggestions, I am having a difficult time in judging whether or not a vid is funny enough - because it may be light-hearted, but that doesn't make it a comedy. And a lot of the true comedy vids are really short. So you need a gazillion vids - but you also have to break it up so that the audience can stay focused and in the funny zone.
So please - if you have ideas about what vids should be in this show -- please please please go and suggest them. There might be the perfect comedy vid floating around out there on disc or on the web and the VJs won't know this unless you tell them.
Cops and Robbers: I have no idea what I am suggesting here, thus me hunkering down with the discs this weekend. I think the reason I am drawing a blank is because I am really genre-focused right now and I am having a hard time seeing the Robbers for the Cops, as it were. I don't think this theme has to specifically mean that we are talking CSI or "Heat" or actual cop shows here. Although it can. I think there are certain genre shows that can and will fit appropriately in this category - there are cops and robbers all throughout space and time.
When in doubt? It never hurts to suggest anyway.
EDIT:
gwyn_r has awesome thoughts about the C&R show and fandoms (Professionals, S&H, Miami Vice - etc) that I totally blanked on because, let's face it: I have only had one cup of coffee today and no Diet Mountain Dew. I need to correct this travesty. But Gwyn is in the comments (and makes so much sense) and I *know* that a lot of y'all remember or know a vid that will be perfect for this show. So - SUGGEST!!
Hi Def: Do you know of someone who finally got their hands on DVDs and went back and remastered some of her old vids? Was that someone you? Well - hey there gal - get yourself over there and tell the VJs all about it. This show promises to be fantastic - I can't wait.
Horror: Okay, so there is
permetaform's Ring vid. Yes. What else? I know we as a group are a bunch of sick minded women (and men!!) because I have hung out with us. So what have y'all come up with/seen. Go forth and suggest, my friends so that the scary can rule the land! Muahahahahaha
Instrumentals: I struggled with these vids for so long that finally coming to a place where I can appreciate the fact that there are no lyrics feels so good because it was difficult to arrive there. I had to work to understand - and shows like this are invaluable to getting there. And getting there is tremendously freeing, so I recommend this to everyone.
Historical/Epic Vids: oh and now I see that there is a page that explains each of these vid categories, so what I have been doing for the past half hour is actually just a colossal waste of time!
::headdesk::
So um. Go here for Official Explanations of the Vid-shows and ignore my rambling. Or not. Maybe you like my rambling, in which case, Bless You.
http://www.vividcon.com/vidshow_list.shtml (and hey! my ideas for "action vids" seem to be dead on with the sites. GO ME! Except I actually believe that even if there are 75 clips in 30 seconds - that that can still be subtle. Of course, subtle for me is probably a very different thing than subtlety in the real world. I wonder if I have a Rodney Mckay Subtlety Filter?)
So I had questions about this topic and the VVC site says that it is vids from historical/epic shows and movies. So - I guess Deadwood counts, then?
So this is what I am doing and what I have decided you should be doing as well. So, get off your ass --except not really - it is very hard to type standing up and also - I don't believe in unnecessary physical exertion. So sit right there but get off your mental ass and think of some suggestions. Cause the more vids suggested, the better the shows. It is like the Food Pyramid - ya gotta have variety to be healthy.
Also to avoid Vid-Over-Stimulation. That is what the Premieres show is for.
