Because they are cruel, cruel bastards! That's like, the most awful thing that happens to Peter everever. Yes, even counting Uncle Ben. (Am not reading Ultimate, just have a shallow rundown of the ancient original canon fairly well stuck in my head.) I wasn't even a Spiderfan and I felt bad about it just from getting the spillover in much later Marvel comics that touched on it.

OMIGOD!!!!!

GWEN!!

I read it. And then I was all like I was when Joyce died - there is gonna be like a magical intervention and there wasn't and OMIGOD and she had shit to do and was just at the mall and NO ONE TOLD ME.

It may be that I am not cut out to read comic books after all. Damn Marvel.

The thing with Gwen Stacy is that she's the ... hm. The Jesse? The Tara? Of Marvel comics. She's the one who always stays dead, no matter who gets resurrected around her (and Marvelverse is like Jossverse -- almost nobody stays dead) because her death had such a huge resounding impact on Peter's story. And I'm not selling the marvelverse here, am I? It's really not packed with tragic permanent, unexpected deaths. [hides Illyana Rasputin under a sofa cushion] Gwen is one of the few, the proud.

I am so reserving judgement until the end of the arc. If she's still dead then, I'm going to be upset. Such a waste of a character. I mean, if you were going to kill her off, why do the big reveal to her just before?

(Random LJ passer-by directed this way to see the Lana/Illyria masterpiece)
