They're supposedly (according to my optometrist) microscopic tears in the retina. I was 23 at the time she told me about it and she gave me about 30 years before they may cause a problem. It's worse for me because I'm nearly blind nearsighted. I think a few once in a while is not the end of the world, but you may want to talk to your eye doctor for information direct from the source.
