this particular question ("why is this vid making me feel Emotion X") is not one that normally comes to mind when I'm analyzing vids. I tend to compartmentalize the emotional and technical aspects, so I can go on forever about various effects and clip choices and editing styles and what they add to the vid objectively, but when it comes to emotion I usually get as far as "I'm feeling X!" and then stop there, without trying to figure out what specifically is causing it.
YOU ARE ME.
"Can *I* do this?"
Lately, I've been trying to figure out just *how* this is done, in particular by paying attention to how stories are told in vids. Let's pick on sisabet since we're playing on her porch ;)
I can't really describe it, but she... has this certain way of story-telling. I would still greatly enjoy or even love the vid if I don't look deeper beyond "Whee! Head wiggle to music!", but if I would just *ask* myself "What is this clip for?" or "Why would these clips intercut?"? Whoa -- there's just so much to be learned. (And I'm thinking about S.O.S. as I'm writing this.) It's like a vid-watching technique that doesn't necessarily come naturally to me. I guess it makes sense because, to use permetaform's distinction from yesterday, my default is more audio-visually inclined than narratively-inclined. But now I think I can feel it. I knew her cuts were obviously never random, but now I'm starting to see why? Or partly why. I think she... puts the viewer in the character's shoes - like really. What could they be thinking at this moment in time? What could their brains be flashing *to them*? And so on. Rewatch S.O.S. with this in mind and be re-blown away as I was.
I believe this skill can be learned, though I think it looks very instinctive for sisabet, hee. This, combined with what she and Lum said to me recently about how POV is not so much about what the character knows and thinks, but about *convincing* audience what you *think* they're thinking? Gah - I can't even imagine the possibilities.
