I don't know the answer to the fanfic question. I suspect it might be a wee bit different just because there is the easy availability of fiction in general. Fanvids don't really have an equivalent, as pro music videos don't usually do what we do (Although, HBO has some interesting promos for their series).

I do know that there are many people who will read a certain author, regardless of her fandom. There are a lot of fen who'll read a story that features a particular bullet-proof kink, regardless of fandom.

Heck, there are even some crazy people out there that will read anything at all - as long as there is a cave in. Some people's kids, y'know?

Interestingly enough - I found myself reading fanfic last night about a show I never watched (not even one episode of) about characters I don't know at all because I saw a vid and it connected with me. And then I got so involved in the story I was reading that once I finished I realized I was holding my hand over my heart and not really breathing. I was emotionally involved! With strangers!

And that is another thing with fanfic -- the intros are not needed, so sometimes it is hard to just pick up a story because you are in a sense jumping into a narrative right in the middle of things. Who are these people? What? Why is he sleeping on the floor? What? Wait - that character is a *woman*??

And so often, for me, this makes it very difficult to just read anything, even if the story is incredible, because you skipped the intros and moved right on to the good stuff (and this is also a great big plus if you are already involved in the fandom).

In this case, though - the vid I watched gave me a great sense of what to expect and the story gave me a voice to put with the character and NOW I might have to watch the show, so just kill me now cause that is ALL I need.
